How much interest in a Canadian limited edition Ruger No.1?

On the fence here guys, I love the whole concept. As nice as it would be to have a Canadian edition, I think the fact that this is taking an international interest in the Commonwealth is even cooler. I fully support your efforts. I must meditate on this one. :p

I wonder could we stoke up a 215gr RN to 2300fps out of the Ruger? Anyone ever hotload a 303 in a strong action to see what it was capable off? Like a P14 or a Ross? I have some 215gr RN on route. I'm not talking Improved(Epps, etc) just plain old 303 loaded to the nuts. I believe Hornady loaded 150 gr light magnum loads and pretty near equaled 308 Winchester ballistics. And has anyone decided on a barrel length yet? Would 22" barrel reduce our ballistics, for us handloaders?

303 ruger

Ruger makes several #1 models with up to a 26" barrel, so there should be no problem unless we want to go beyond that. I say order it with a 26" tube with the standard 1/4 rib, built in scope bases, rings as per usual, and the standard iron sights. all stock ruger Fare for simplicity.

Anyone who wants it shorter can cut it off....they don't stretch worth a damn. and by the way..barrel length is the easiest way to gain velocity..even with a .303. Many of the early British guns used 28 & 30" barrels on these with the heavy bullets.

For those with all the 'individual tastes and special needs' Martini makes an excellent single shot rifle..starting at about $17,000 Can. Call him and see if he will cut you a personal deal for $1300- $1500 !!!!!!!

Clay, If we get to the point where you need deposits, I will be happy to send you a supply of aspirin/tylenol for the headaches you are no doubt developing.

Thanks in advance for your efforts to date!

X2 for the 26" tube. I was a little concerned, due to the fact that a 22" tube seemed to be mentioned a fair bit. A Ruger 1 with a 26" tube is really starting to peek my interest;) If we could hammer down an exact model, It would really get a lot of people off the fence, myself included. What about barrel diameter, light sporter or medium? Any of you Ruger owners got any opinion on that? I myself would hunt with it, but would probably wind up on the sandbags most of the time so I'm thinking medium?

I would also prefer the Medium sporter with the 26" barrel and open sights.
And some sort of inscription to designate it as a Canadian or Commonwealth commemorative.

The one shown in ceb's message is right. Anyone given thought to a case-hardened receiver if it doesn't send the price way up? Think about the unique character for a collector. Check out the Hagen rifle to see what it looks like.....

Actually, I think this was a custom built rifle. I posted our efforts on this "special" on the rugerforum, and a member there posted the gunsinternational ad.

I also wonder what case hardening the receiver might cost.

Does anyone have any idea? Maybe Clay will chime in.

DANG- somebody beat me to it!!
Likely not a factory barrel, just a factory contour?
NOT for $1700 , mind you!
Cat

Whoever buys that is likely to be a tad grumpy if Clay's efforts result in a run of brand new Nº1 in .303 Br. for a few hundred less.

I'd be in on this if I had the cash, "just because". Nonetheless, I hope the project is successful, not just because it's a good idea but also because it originated in Canada.

Now if someone would start making replicas of the old Martini rifle...

:) Stuart

About $250+ for case hardening. Too much withour an upgrade in wood and other touches that would take this project out of reach for too many. Do the custom stuff on your own.
