VZ58: Optics, sights & mounts. update sept

And that works? She can now take off the front guard without having to bother the scope mount?

Yep.

There is NO need at all to chop the $$ scope mount. See my mod in the FAQ section of the VZ 58 sticky. The ESQ handguard or scope mod or whatever deckard called it in the end...

For this universal side mount rail:

The gunsmith I'm working with doesn't want me to get metric rivets, because all his tapping tools are imperial. The only rivets available on the site are in millimeters, should I just get the rail and let the gunsmith sort it out?

This is for scoping an 858 with a 4x24 POSP scope.

"edit" I do think that this scope mount will cover up the SN# of the gun, is this illegal? I'm certain the police won't like this one bit, what can I do?

the main differences between the SVD and the AK mounts are , AK has a 1/2-1 " forward offset and uses the backend to stop it from moving forward during fire. having the mount forward over the ejection port , it will be hit by casings.

SVD has no forward offset and it uses a lug in the front to stop the mount from moving forward.

in your pic above, thats a universal rail and an AK mount . i prefer using the SVD mount and rail for red dots:

Is there a reason to preferring an SVD mount to an AK one? Are they of different heights? Does one offset to the side more/less?
Thanks.

When was the last time you had someone check your serial number??? It is against the law to alter or remove a serial, not to cover it temporarily.

If it requires inspection just remove the mount and show whoever is needing to see it...

Or if you want to get really stupid phone the CFC and ask for one of those serial number stickers.

vz58 posp scope...

Hi, i would like to know if you need to modify your vz58 if you want to put a posp scope with a ak mount or if you can put it on it right "out of the box?" (i'm talking about the ak mount found at kalinka optics...)

Thank you very much

Hi Everyone,

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, I need to know if anyone has removed the front sights, base and all. I have "big plans" for my 858, and after much building and rebuilding, I think I finally have the idea i'll go with. But it requires some major changes. I need to know if anyone else has done it, and whether there is any welded material underneath, or if it is held on merely by pins, paint and pressure. Any comments would be greatly appreciated, and I promise to post the finished product when finished!!

Happy Holidays.

no , i think they have the same height.

there isnt much choice of where you can mount the rail to the receiver so if you need a longer eye relief then go for an AK mount scope cos it has an 1/2" forward off-set .

do remember the walls on the receiver is rather thin so looking at the 2 rails , the SVD rail would have more places to mount 3 screws.

id like to get around 3x magnification on my 58, i have a nea rail coming whats the best scope for it? i was thinking screw the magnification and just get an aim-point micro and that i may still do but, i really wish i could slap on the 3x aim-point magnifier to. Other than that, whats the best 3x or over option for the NEA mount?

Hold on to that idea. You will have room to do that with our new pict AR stock adapter, the existing NEA hand guard and our new pict barrel clamp that is part of the new tri rail system NEA is doing with DMcFaul.

AK (on the right) is about 1/2" taller

i know the eye relief of the magnifier is to short for what i need, that's why i was debating a different scope like the Leupold handgun scope, i was toying around with the idea of a posp scope but i fell a scope that size defeats the purpose of having such a light maneuverable rifle and botched my plans for an ambi bolt. im glad to see that NEA is coming through with yet again another ingenious design for the vz58 that is making me love it more and more. Keep it up and my rifle will be more NEA that CZ.:)

Stevo.. I've run my Leupold on my 58 and it works pretty good accuracy-wise. I found it awkward for the type of shooting I usually do though. Off the bench it's great. I did use it for one coyote outing and got one, but had difficulty accurately leading runners and got skunked on them... more from lack of practice I'm sure, but I find the 1x sights more reflexive for me.

Mostly what I have used it for is checking return to zero of various uppers since it gives me the best accuracy on each mount. I bought my LER scope about 6 years ago and have yet found a rifle for it to call home. It's spent more time on my Buckmark pistol than on an rifle.

my 6x24 SVD scope measured the same as yours then i stand corrected , the SVD scope is shorter .... thanks
