Savage Precision Carbine

As best I can figure out from Savage's 2010 catalog, the Predator Hunter is not offered in .308. So if that's your calibre of choice, then the Precision Carbine still fits the bill. Got my scope (Bushy 6500 2.5-16) and rings/mounts this week, but the temp has taken a serious dive. Hopefully warms up a bit by the weekend so I can try it out.

I finally got my .223 out to the range today. It was cold out so I only had enough patience to shoot a couple groups after zeroing the scope at 100 yards. I was shooting Winchester white box 55gr (the cheapest I could find for my AR) and of the two 5 shot groups, the best was 0.86". I'm happy! :) I think with some better ammo, and eventually some reloading, this might be a real shooter.

Congrats on getting your rifle back! How does the action feel now? Good to hear that you are shooting sub moa first time out! That was around the size of my first days best too! I think your groups will shrink when it warms up a bit. Any pics from todays adventure?

Unfortunately no pics. The batteries in the camera were dead after getting a workout through Christmas. I'll pick up some batteries tomorrow and at least show the target.

The action feels great. I'm not very experienced with bolt actions but it exceeded my expectations and increases the value of the rifle by more than the cost of having it done IMO.

Sounds Great! I would like to have my action smoothed out. It feels quite rough for how good it shoots. I'm not complaining but my PC feels less smooth than my 12Fvss. Hope you take the camera with next time your out!

Honestly most of this is your fault Jerry. With all that talk of how great these Savage's are, cheap add-ons available from SSS, do-it-yourself barrel swaps, accu-trigger/accu-stock, out-of-the-box accuracy, and the list goes on.

Maybe I'd be happier with a 10fp bedded in a hand rubbed antique oil finish walnut stock, or better yet a Stevens 200 re-barrelled with a heavy sporter contour Shilen in the same said stock. oh man... :bigHug:

anyone have a Boyd's walnut stock for thier savage?

Happy to offer you more 'drugs....'

If you look at the Savage American rifles, they do look great with a walnut stock. Pretty much any rifle would

I wished getting stocks was easier. Most US companies are not set up for export so I can't import as a dealer.

If you need more parts/barrels/toys, just let me know.

I know you WAAAANNNNA...:p

Jerry

I was using the bipod and my shoulder. No rear rest this time. With some good ammo and a rear rest (and a shooter with some skill) I imagine it should shoot quite accurately.

Thanks, it's a Voodoo 42" Weapon Case. It's the perfect size for these rifles.

That looks like a perfect fit for the rifle. Did you get it from one of the dealers here? I might have to copy you on this(I'll get mine in black):D

So today I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow CGNer- Toolman and got shown how to make match grade ammo. Thanks so much for the intro on reloading! Was able to put together a few rounds and take them out to try them.

We went out to the Seven Sisters Range and I was able to try shooting at several distances. My best 100 yard group was .82 moa(not a good start to the day) My best 300 yard group was .78 moa and then the fun started;) Was able to set up for a 500yard shot and got a .54moa group! I didnt bellieve it so my second try got me a .58moa group! Not bad for a factory Savage Precision Carbine shooting 168gr Federal Gold Metal Match ammo. Now please note that a few rookie mistakes were part of the day and if you want to get things on paper make sure you allow for windage in the right direction. Left not right silly rookie:redface: and make sure you notice when the winds die down too!

Had a great time and watched Toolman do a 1/3moa group at 500 yards to keep me humble.:sniper: This with a load he is "working" on. Also got to try a dream rifle of mine and I am now saving up for a PGW Coyote or Timberwolf. Oh the rounds I made.. Did better with those than my FGMM!:dancingbanana: And a few pics of the day!

A huge thank you for Toolman for showing me all the reloading stuff and trying to teach me how to shoot better. And for the time on a great rifle!:D Its going to take me a while to learn the basics but I am trying!

Icedragonmx, good to meet you as well. Great day today. The look on your face when you saw your 1/2 min group a 500 yards was priceless. You and that Savage make a good team.

Looking at the 500 yard pic, I think we did that walk 4 times back and forth. Good sleep tonight.

See ya on the range.

Ok I got a new tool to play with. Looks like my Savage is a shooter! Check out the link in the picture for a very easy to use program that will give you the MOA and extras on a target picture. Just make sure when your out at the range to have a ruler included in the pic. Can't wait to get my new mount and rings in!
