Savage Precision Carbine

I just purchased a Savage 10 Precision in .308 from the EE and I hope to have it by Friday!

I plan on mounting a Bushnell 6500 Tactiacal 2.5-16 x 42 scope on a Millett Picatinny Savage Accu-Trigger short action rail.

I plan on using this rifle mostly for target shooting 100 to 600 meters but also would like it to be usable for hunting at ranges that could at times be well under 100 meters.

1 - I hope that this is the correct rail for mounting this scope

2 - I would like to mount the scope on some type of Q-release mount, maybe like like one of these American Defense mounts or something similar?

http://www.americandefensemanufacturing.com/browse/category/opticmounts/scopemounts/

Could someone please provide some advice ragarding the viability of this set-up, can it be done, what mount(s) I could use and where I could obtain them?

TIA,

DT

You'll probably find that the combination of the pic rail and a QR mount like an ADM or Larue will put the scope really high up and make it difficult to get any kind of cheek weld. If you want to swap scopes, you may want to look at getting Warne bases and QR rings, or Talley QR rings. I have a 10PC and use the Warne bases with Burris Signature rings. The inserts in the rings let me get a 20MOA adjustment, and I found this setup keeps the scope significantly lower than using a one-piece pic rail. Here's a pic of my rig, which has the same scope you're using, just not the Tactical version.

Thanks for the info RHS!

Thanks for adding the pic also!
That’s exactly how I plan on having mine set up.
I think my rifle is in at the post office but I won't be able to open it until I figure out how to sneak it past the Boss (wife).
I bought way to many guns and accessories lately!

I see that Warne rings are available at Grouse River - http://www.grouseriver.com/Warne_Maxima_BRNO_CZ_550_Quick_Detach_p/opt-000222.htm

Which leads to two more questions;

1- I already have the Millett Picatinny short action rail (not sure what MOA) – Will the Warne rings will work on this bases?

2- What height Warne rings would work best for 100 to 500 meters (med? high?)

Thanks again,

DT

I don't see any reason why the Warne rings shouldn't work on the Millett rail. Weaver base rings have kind of a sloppy fit on the pic rail slots, so you just have to make sure you index them the same way every time you mount/remove the scope. I'm using Warne QD rings on an Ultimak pic rail on my M14S and they work just fine.

The ring height doesn't really affect how far you can shoot, but how high the scope sits above the barrel. The Burris Signature rings I'm using have inserts that let you adjust the scope so you don't have to use the internal travel of the scope to zero quite so much. This way I can have the scope elevaton turret set quite low in its adjustment range and have maximum adjustment available to dial in elevation for distance. With the Warne QD rings you don't have this option, so any adjustment will come from the scope turrets. I typically buy the lowest rings I can get that allow the objective of the scope to clear the barrel. Gives me a better cheek weld.

rhs,

Thanks again for the reply.

I've been doing some research, and reading, and corresponded with Jerry @ Mystic Precision and now I'm pretty much sold on forgoing the Q-attach in favor of the Burris Signature Zee rings that you mentioned.
Of course the problem with my latest decision is that apparently they are sold out clear across the nation!
Seems everything that I want is either sold out or rare as hens teeth!
Maybe I should just by a Ford Focus and call it a day?
They're not sold out are they?

I bought my Sav PC on a whim and it has turned out to be a great little rifle. Just because i had them, i started off with 125gr Ballistic Tips and the rifle produces easy 0.5 - 0.6" groups with little effort.

I have a Sigjtron SIII 16x mil dot scope mounted in Leupold QRW rings.

If you need 30mm rings I have a couple pairs of lightly used 30mm high Burris Sig Z rings that I would sell for about half the retail price. They'd come complete with all the offset inserts.

I switched to med height rings.

Burris Signature Zee rings

I found some Med 30mm Burris Signature Zee rings at Opticsplanet.com!

I try to buy things locally but I wanted them bad and I'm impatient and they had them so . . .

Now I impatiently wait for delivery!

I picked up my PC in 223 about a month ago from Ellwood Epps and I'm happy I did. It's one of the newer ones that come with the threaded barrel.

I haven't done anything to it yet other than a Vortex scope. I got a Farrel base from Jerry at Mystic Precision so I went with low rings and still have a little more room to go lower.

I have started working up my hand loads and it's shown some great and not so great results from some different bullet choices so far. My shooting is all done with a bipod and rear bag at 100 yards until I can find a nice place to take it a little further. It really likes the 69gr SMK's which are under half inch when I get a day with little wind. I can't seem to get 50gr V-Max moly coated to group between one and two inches right now. The 50gr varmint grenades are worse. I just started some work with the 35gr Hornady NTX and they are showing promise. I have been able to get those around the 3/4 inch and will try a little work with OAL to see if it gets any better. All my work has been done with H335. I'm trying to get my hands on some Benchmark and Varget, but what little Wholesale or Cabelas get in is sold out within a week or two.

Anyway, here are a few pictures.

These have been some of the results with the 69gr SMK's. 23.8gr of H335 while finding the best OAL. (The 2 groups from 2.300 and 2.320 were just under 0.75")

This one is at 2.240" OAL
