Can someone help me out?

My wife and I enjoy going to the gun club frequenty, I throw a bunch of lead downrange with my pistol, and she slowly plinks away with an Anschutz .22LR rifle with peep sights. This is fine and dandy when it's cold out and we are limited to the 20yd indoor range, but when the weather warms up, and we head outside to the bigger lanes, I would like a .22 that I can shoot at 100yds while the barrel cools down on the big ones.

What kind of .22's are out there that are good target shooters at that range nowadays?? Would like to stay under $400 out of the box if possible, and not have to rebuild the whole rifle with aftermarket parts to get it to shoot tight groups. Any "factory" tack-drivers out there?

What type of Anschutz does you wife have? maybe you all ready have a tach drive and don't know it?

The 452 is an excellent choice but over your price range. Look at the savage heavy barreled line of MK II's. If you want a dedicated target perfomance rifle, that will probably be your best bet. But if you are a betting man, almost any old .22 is capable of fine accuracy if you take the time to locate one. That's the fun part.

i used to own a remington nylon clone made by cbc of brazil. a guy near yarmouth nova scotia used to bring them in once in a while. at 300 yards with open sights you could put all your rounds in a group the size of your fist, if you did your part right. i miss that gun.

Best for the money? Look at the savage Mark II with the heavy barrel.

Angry Soldier , what was the holdover at 300 yds? you must have had about 10 feet of drop!

Oh yah i think i know that guy too could he run faster than a speeding locomotive and wear a red cape ?:D

the ballastics chart stickied in this forum says hold over would be 163 inches thats more than 10 feet i always love these posts

OK, I just went to a ballistics calculator. If you were shooting the 525 federal packs (38gr, 180fps, 0.132BC) You would have 123.7" of holdover if you were sighted at 50yds.

Yikes!

I'd get either the Savage heavy bbl or the CZ452. Me, I prefer the CZ American because its lighter.

300 yard iron sighted fist sized groups with a 22LR? All this stuff I read on gunnutz gives me a shooters inferiority complex.

Somthing I should add that may be of benifit to the original poster and to any 300 yard snipers out there.

We ran several different loads of .22 LR through a chronograph through a few different rifles and came up with some interesting stuff. The 'premium', high dollar ammo that should be the best had the highest velocity spread of all the ammo tested. If I remember correct, and don't hold me to exact figures, varied about 120 FPS between shots. The cheapy Federal bulk ammo only varied about 20 FPS. It may not sound like a big deal, and at normal ranges of 50 yards probably won't make as big of a deal. But anything further and you can bet 120 FPS will be the difference between a hit and a miss. Accuracy is more of an ammo issue when it comes to rimfires and not so much a rifle issue. (Of course there are exceptions)

And for what it's worth, I like to brag about a 300 yard kill shot I made on a gopher. It took me three shots with an 18X scope. The first two walked me in, the third was nothing more then shear luck. But I had a witness. ;)

Pffft! I used to head-shot squirrels with my factory 10/22 at 500 yards; usually got them right in the eye too. I always tried to time the shot between blinks cause I didn't want to waste the eyelid meat. :D

Just WOW:eek: I am calling big time :bsFlag: on this one. Looks like I should be able to sell off my Anshutz prone rifle and stop wasting good .308 match ammo in my $4000 custom built target rilfe, if you can get this kind of accuracy out of a clone Remington Nylon at 300 yards:rolleyes:

bwaaaaahahahahahahahahaaa................

bwahahahahahhhahhahhahhahaaaa......

Gasp....bwaahahahhahahahahahaaaa.....oh man that's good.:D That's almost signature line material right there!:D Sorry dude, with open sights, at that range, with a 22lr that is pretty much impossible. :slap:

Getting back on track for the original poster, try to find a used BRNO #3 or 4. Excellent accuracy and you can usually pick one up for $350 or so in good condition. Check the EE, they appear there frequently.

Where can i get one of those guns that shoot fist size groups at 300? I have been using the wrong guns I guess for many years and could NEVER achieve a group like that. Are they expensive and rare?

i will throw out my Mossy 144 lsb and Marlin81s and Mossy 151s ....just to have a clone that shoots that great, and with open sights....WOW.
