The Royal cartridge was not a mere "modification" of some round. It was an original. From it others "created" over 2 dozen cartridges, from the short 6.5mm RM to the .340 Wby and .458 Win Mag. and all of the ones in between.

While the knowing sit back and bask in the grace of true Royalty. I pity you for if you could only understand...

Sorry about your hallucinatory fantasy. ;) have you read the history of the 375 cartridge? I believe you will find that H&H were trying to compete with
" 9.5mm Mannlicher-Schoenauer. In 1910, the 9.5mm was known in Great Britain as the .375 Nitro-Express Rimless. " Please correct me if I am wrong

What does your post have to do with anything? Blinded by the smoke and mirrors, I suspect. Or by the unassailable awe and glory of the true Royalty. :)

Or wait...are you implying that the .375 Belted Rimless Nitro Express is somehow a modified .375 Rimless Nitro Express 2 1/4"? Because if that is the case (no pun intended) then you are wrong.

Here is a pictoral explanation of the difference between the Imposter/Pretender and the true Royalty:

Edit - BTW, where is BigRed? I thought he'd be all over this thread like stink on a monkey. Perhaps he is still playing with those WSSMs... :)

actually I believe you claimed the H&H was the original :onCrack: Can I ;) have some of what your having?
:dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

It is an original design. Did you not see the glaring similarities between the Imposter/Pretender and the .375 Breeding? Or between the basic case dimensions of the .404 Jeffery and the I/P? What cartridge does the H&H mimick? What cartridge was it based on? None! It is original, just like true Royalty! And the H&H was/is in a completely different class than the 9.5 M-S. It was a far superior cartridge - 300gr @ 2400fps vs 270gr @ 2150 fps. :D

:) I am sure all that African game could tell the difference, another silly delusion.:dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

Actually the 9.5mm was considered inadequate for the Big 5. IMO it is basically a .358 Winchester - which is not at all a bad thing.

The .375 H&H launched a 270gr bullet +500fps faster. It was revolutionary really - there is another quality sorely lacking in the I/P!

In fact the 9.5mm would not be legal for Bison in BC or the Yukon. i still would love to get my hands on a nice little M-S carbine in that chambering!

All this discussion about obsolete cartridges is fun, but it doesn't change the fact that the .375 Ruger is the NEW KING of the .375's. The H&H has had a loooong head start, but just as the .300WM took over from the .300 H&H, so will happen with the .375 Ruger.

ALL HAIL THE NEW KING!

GH - you forgot the "Koolness Factor", which I believe you put forth as a critical measure of any cartridge's worthiness. Do you dare say that the .375 Ruger is even remotely as Kool as the grand H&H ?

In all likelihood, getting any 375 isn't a reality for me. If it was however, there are a number of factors that would govern my choice.
  • 1st, a while ago my Son In Law lent me his custom 375 H&H to 'play' with. It was based on a Sako action, a good job was done on it and I enjoyed testing reloads and punching paper with it. As such, I still have a decent supply of brass and the dies.
  • 2nd, other than roughly 100 f/sec or so difference in velocity, possibly a couple of grains difference in powder charge and a slight difference in length, again, I don't see much of an improvement going to the Ruger variation.
  • 3rd, considering some of my present caliber choices such as, 219DW, 30-06, 308NM, 303Br, 348WCF, 44-40, 45-70 and 458WM, if I was going for a 375 it would most likely be the proven 375 H&H.
:)

The .375 Ruger may in time prove to be the new king, but I would sure like to see Ruger do something equally royal in 9.3!!!

Nothin is cooler than a Jefferies double in .375H&H just the Name Holland & Holland is Regal and bespeaks quality .;)

Now if we are just looking at coolness's factor that is coolness's being something new flashy modern and powerful then the .375 Ultra wins hands down derived from the time honored 404 jefferies case It is extremely accurate and far more potent a much bigger stick in the playground
