anyone here able to give me some advise on shooting .32 rimfire ....did they make a .32 short as well as the .32 long cartridge? and is .32 long to hot to shoot in my defender 89?

they chamber perfectly in the gun...sorry I dont have any picts... when I chamber the cartridge the bullet stops just short of the mouth of the chamber almost flush, also its an earlier Defender 89 with a very low serial#.

If the round chambers it is more than likely designed for a .32 long. All the .32 short guns I have ever seen had very short cylinders and would not accept a .32 long. Every .32 I've ever had has had no problem with chambering the long cartridges and I have shot lots of longs out of both my XL Bulldog and H&R Red jacket. They both chamber with the bullet almost at the chamber mouth. Hope this helps.

I finally succeded in making up some new reloadable .32 rf cases. Got my lathe set up and am just waiting on some brass and supplies to make more. Once I get some made up I'll sell a few cases.

hey guys, just looking at your question, lol, and i was thinking yes, they did make a long and short, in fact they made:32 extra short, short, long, long rifle, and extra long. surprised me to look at this info, and the variety that was avalable in 32rim.

cool I'll buy a few at least a dozon, what are you priming them with? acorn blanks?

Yep. Acorn blanks work ok. Mine shoot in both my .32 revolvers with no misfires or indexing issues. Much more reliable than the original ammo too. A little time consuming to make but definitly worth it.

I use 27 caliber hilti caps.
but you gota open them up to get the smokeless powder out.
Some of them hilti caps will drive a 3 inch nail into solid concret :D

The good thing with the hilti 27 cal is there big enough in Dia that they dont need to be off set.
Just drill out a 32 S&W Shorts primer pocket and make a two step hole.
Shove in the 27 cal opened empty Hilti cap then load with BP and a 32 cal Rd ball.
Your good to go.
beats paying $50 + a box of 50 rds for 32 RF ammo.

Great ideas, but we need pics of all these solutions! Can you please provide the dimensions of the Hilti 27 cal cap? Why not leave the powder and use it as your load? There are six strengths - you could just choose the one that works (unless you want to go black powder of course).

The dimensions of 32 S&W (Short) seem too big to replace 32 Rimfire Long - its base and neck are both 0.315".

I have a Rem #4 Rolling Block and I've been using the "Dixie Gun Works" 32 Long brass cases (KA1206) - it's turned brass with an offset hole for a 22 blank (the "acorn" type). I tap a 0.315" round ball (48 grs) into place over 1.5grs of Bullseye.

I'm always looking for better and cheaper reloading solutions.

I use the Hilti caps as is although so far I have not used the red ones. I think I have some black ones which I am assuming to be really hot. That colour chart posted is really handy for knowing what power strength the caps are

cheers Doug

hmm thated work for sure ....when we were kids my brother up graded his .22 airrifle to a .22 cal hilti powered rifle had way to much snap for the pellet though usely blew it to bits as it left the barral from the pressure. ....then dad found it and it met the chopsaw ..

Well i had the Red ones and they were hot i think we tryed one in a 25 RF Stevens it fired a lead ball 3 inchs into hard wet Fir firewood :D at about 20 Ft
But id not try any in them little 32 RF antique Spur trigger guns.
In a thick chambered rifle sure give em a whirl but i empty mine for the Handguns.
Some of the chamber walls are very thin.
There a bugger to pry open carefully to dump out the powder. I wear Googles when doing it.

im going to give it a shot... you say the .27 hilti blank will work in a .32? hows that work in the chamber isnt it a bit lose? I'll put 10 or 15 grs of ffg in it.

No! you take a 32 Colt CF case drill out its back so the 27 cal hilti fits in there flush.
You have to remove part of the 32 colts rim so the hammer can crush the 27 cal hiltis RF Edge to fire it.
Its hard to discribe.
If you cant get your mind around the Idea id just check out gun shows for 32 rf ammo,
cause if you get the wrong hilti caps and just start trying to shoot them in Antique RF revolvers you could blow up the gun and yourself......
