.45 ACP and .45 Auto Diffrence

Same situation.....

My barrel is marked for 5.56. All I have is .223, can I shoot it?

I always thought that .223 is the civilian name for the 5.56 nato round.... just like .308 is the name for 7.62....

P.S. I also thought that ACP meant AUTOMATIC COMBAT PISTOL...

I learned somthing today as well.... ;)

Yep, .45 ACP (automatic colt pistol) and 45 auto are the same. There is, however, a 45 GAP (glock automatic pistol), which is a cartrige delevlped by glock but never took off really. It is only offered in three glock pistols and is not very common at all. 45 ACP is by far the more common 45 auto, and that is why 45 auto is considered to refer only to 45 ACP.

has anyone even bought the GAP? I only know of one friend in the US who's a .45 fanatic and decided to try it out. Other than him, I dont know a single other soul who even thought about buying one :confused:

No....Arrrggg...I have never heard anyone call the 45 Scofield as a 45 "Short Colt"...You can call the 45 Scofield the 45 S&W, but using the term 45 Long Colt is akin to saying that "clips" and "mags" are the same thing....

Seems to me that a lot of the brass is stamped "45 LC". What would that mean if not Long Colt? And if the 45 ACP means "Auto Colt Pistol" There is a little room for misunderstanding though you would have to work at it. :p

Technically correct or not, its been going on for over 100 years now so precident probably starts to have a bit of weight. :)

A couple quotes:

The .45 Colt (often incorrectly called the .45 Long Colt) ... [4]

Is the .45 Colt the same as the .45 Long Colt?
Yes. The .45 Colt is exactly the same round as the .45 Long Colt. The .45 Long Colt name was required in the late 1800's to differentiate between the .45 Colt and the shorter .45 Schofield. With the passing of the .45 Schofield as a popular round, the name .45 Colt is now the most accepted name for this cartridge. [5]

9mm is a bit more confusing...
Here are some synonyms for 9mm:
* 9x19
* 9 mm
* 9 mm Luger
* 9 mm NATO
* 9x19mm
* 9x19mm NATO
* 9 mm Parabellum
* 9 mm Para

Yeah, and not to be confused with the .380 acp-
.380 Auto
9mm Browning
9mm Browning Short
9mm Corto
9mm Court
9mm Kratak
9mm Kurz
9mm Scurt
9mm Short
9x17mm

And don't forget the 9mm long (9x23 instead of 9x19 is it?)

Yup i had a g37. Never firede it though, i had 3 boxes of ammo, and that was all the ammo i could find for it around my place, so i sold it before firing it.
It is around the length of a .40sw round IIRC.

Ammo and bullets are funny, who knows whats safe to shoot lol
A La Mat?...:D...BTW, there also is a 45 Cowboy....It`s a 45 COLT, cut down to the length of a 45 acp....Of course, it will never catch on, and IIRC, only Starline makes brass for it....

Never heard of a 9mm Long (in modern use anyway), only 9x17, 9x18 (aka (9mm Makarov), and of course 9x19.

9x21 is Italian iirc

edit: Charles, you're right. I was thinking Italy because Beretta's are often advertized as being aviailable in 9x21... apparently popular in Italy due to legal constraints around owning calibres used by the military which is also noted by the wiki article. Thanks.

Rangebob, great photo. Interesting site with some very good animations.

Well, i guess that pic shows the difference between 45acp and 45 colt, aka 45 long colt, so i don't feel so stupid, no wait i always feel stupid,

Did a little searching and figured awakening this thread to add some info would not be a bad thing.

My Question is... can a guy use the same cast bullets in both the 45 Colt and the 45 ACP? I have been thinking about getting a 45 LC and want to shoot the same lead as my 45 ACP.

I noticed there is a .002 difference in the spec. bullet diameter. Is that a deal breaker with cast or jacketed rounds?

Anybody have any real life experience with this?
