Target ammo taking a big jump

Could someone please explain the differences between the Winchester AA target shells and Winchester Super Target shells for me? I appologize if this has been discussed before but I can't find any information on that.

Thanks,
Chris

What makes AA shells a premium? Are the hulls stronger or easier to reload with later on or is the AA ammo much more consistent or.....? I've never seen the Super Target shells before so that's why I'm asking.

Thanks again.
Chris.

I used to pay 24$ for 100 rounds of Winchester Universal at Walmart. Its jumped to almost 30$ now.

That's probably not a bad thing. The "Universals" are about the worst shells I have ever used. I've seen a lot split at the metal on the base. Also they do not cycle well in some Autos and pump guns. Frankly I'm glad I reload.

The AA hulls have a more durable plastic and a "brass" base vs. a steel base. TheAAs are considered to be better for reloading. I reload the Super target hulls once for the first shot in doubles and then toss them. I know many folks that reload the AAs 15 + times.

I know many folks that reload the AAs 15 + times.

I have heard that as well, but I have never seen it with the latest batch of AAs. Must have been in the good ole days? Now days, I don't see there is a need to stretch it, as good hulls are free for the picking in many places.

I don't get 15 reloads out of the polyformed AA's. After 4 or maybe 5 reloads they are looking pretty bad. The older ones are better like most people say. I was just given a box of 500 old style AA's and it's quite amazing the difference. They are as good as Remington...or almost.;)

Old style AA hulls are superior but I don't get 15 reloads out of them, 8 to 10 is about average. Remington STS are good but when my supply of old style AA hulls is exhausted I'm switching to Federal Gold Medal plastic for 12 gauge.

The new AAs are more prone to splitting down the side than the old ones. I scrap them when the crimp starts to get shabby. I've seen other folks that load them until they split all the way down the side. They claim to have loaded them 15 times. I'm not inclined to disagree with their claims.

I used to love Gold Medals. The last batch I reloaded didn't come out worth a ####. Didn't matter what adjustments I made to the Mec. I think Federal went to a softer plastic in them. A couple of weeks ago I saw one that separated at the base and the hull lodged in the barrel. It was Hell to get out of the gun and it was not a reload.

Not good. I was happy with the last lot of 12 gauge GM I loaded a few years ago. However, I had similar problems with their 28 gauge hulls. :(

Might have to stick with AAHS after all.

Federal Gold Medal have given me some problems too. They crimp well, but I've noticed that the last few batches haven't stood up very well at all. The plastic hasn't broken right off, but they fray and split at the end of the plastic very quickly. I've stopped using them. In fact, I've come to a couple of conclusions about hulls this year. One is that I will use only Winchester or Claybuster Clone components with Winchester hulls. The old Winchester hulls are an exception. There are too many of them laying around to ignore:)In fact, I'm actually thinking that it might be a good idea to follow this rule with everything, e.g. Remington components with Remington; Federal Components with Federal...including primer and wads. It's beginning to feel like all this screwing around trying to get a few boxes out of questionable hulls is a mugs game.

I have noticed the opposite. With the new AAs I have never noticed a full length split. After a couple loadings I get a few tiny splits near the crimp. Every time I dip into my stach of older AAs I notice a few that show a full length split on first firing. I also have several cases of 20 boxes of old AA factory loads. I get a full length split about one out of 25. Maybe it has something to do with the plastic getting old. Nitro 27s and STS seem to split at the crimp after two loadings. The best plastic seem to be those cheap gun clubs but do not like the steel heads.

My experience with the old AAs is that they would split after many firings. The new ones would split within the first couple of firings or last quite a while. I don't reload much these days, but my friends that still do prefer the current Remington Nitros and STS hulls, but they are tough to get.

Hey Spank
I finally got my card from Winchester. I think the deadline to send in was 15 November or something. I got mine today. I was just about to call them and "poof" there it was in my mailbox!

I had no problem getting the cards but I did have a problem with getting anyone in my area to honor them including the stores that pushed the promotion. I eventually got paid by check.
