An interesting idea for my Gewehr 98 sporter *Project Update Dec. 20th 2011*

It would make more sense to put a HT on your full wood Gew98 using acraglass, no harm done and no drilling to the receiver. I've heard it works and is removeable.

The cost of parts/work for the Bubba Gew will exceed the value a replacement Gew98 in pretty good shape. Sell the Bubba (or Bush Gun or Truck Gun ) and climb a few rungs on the food chain to another Gew!

What do you mean by "HT" ? I'm interested in an alternative to D + T that can come as close to the real thing as possible. Could you elaborate some more on this technique ?

I posted a WTB ad on Gunboards for all the parts I require so I can get a general idea of the price range for the parts themselves along with availability.

If anyone has a Turked Gewehr 98 for cheap that is still in full military configuration (Imperial style), I certainly wouldn't hesitate to consider it as my sniper clone focus. The thing can be quite beat up as I was thinking of re-finishing it anyway but, as always, the bore must be serviceable with good rifling.

A beautiful image provided by Paul Graf of Gewehr98.com.

This is what I am trying to re-create whether it be with my sporter or a beat up Turked Gewehr 98.

Wish I had a photo printer :D.

HT = High Turret, High Turret Mounts/Scope.
Google Acrglass for securing the mount, Brownells sells it.

I found it on Brownell's website. Many of the references they use are for bedding the action and barrel in the stock and I can't seem to find a reference to scope mounts. I did, however, find a reference through a google search to someone using acraglass while mounting a light rail made by Brownell on a hand gun but they used drill and tap in tandem with acraglass.

From what I understand of acraglass being an adhesive, I could simply put this compound onto the bottom of the desired scope mounts, mate with the receiver in the desired area, and let it cure ?

You have to start with more than 2 valves and a piston for this project too!

Ha, I atleast have more than just a piston to work with on this project :D.

Yes. I heard of a few people doing it as it involves no drilling on a HT.
You could even have 4 dummy screw heads in the mounts.

Interesting. I noticed Brownells sells a lot of different acraglas products, which one would be proper in this case ? Any idea if I would have to mix metal or alkali powder into the compound ?

I'm interested to hear how this turns out. Acra-glassing could be an interesting solution for making mock up milsurps where there's a tradeoff for not damaging the original gun but also making something historically accurate. I'd imagine it would be susceptable to failure if dropped or banged, but these old guns don't see that much abuse any more anyways.

Hi Nabs, interesting your Gew98, the fact that the rifle was upgraded to a sniper during the WWI it carrie a panache.... most certenly it was involved in action.... not a cook gun!!!
I also have a Gew 98 a 1916 Berlin Waffen und Munizionen, a friend had it in the basement, also in very poor conditions, half rotten stock, he barrel as suer pipe, when he ask me if I could dispose for him I comply. Sand blast the action, replace fire pin and spring, got a new magazine and bottom assembly, found a new like military step barrel in 7x57 cut and recrown to 18 3/4" that a friend rechamber for me in a 7x64 ( since already own one 7x57 ), ad replaced the bolt handle, carved a slick stock on a block of brazilian rosewood, originally I put on a peep sight, later replaced with scope. If I find the way to post the picture I will ... so fare I did not figur out the way!!!!

Nice, I am glad you were able to make something out of that beat up Gewehr 98.

I have some ideas that will temporarily solve the bluing issue on parts that have lost it. I can get a hold of some cold blue and apply that. I know it is not a Permanent solution and it will rub off but it worth a try to see how the rifle looks when complete. This is the last thing on my priority list for this rifle at the moment.

By the looks of the stock disc on my Gewehr 98 sporter, she was re-issued at least three times, perhaps more otherwise it would be unit marked but the disc is blank on both sides. I have cleaned off all the rust that was on the stock disc and it looks a lot better now compared to when I first got it.

Same goes for the recoil lug, a definitive improvement.

I compared the bolt on this sporter to a bolt I pulled out of my 98M which is also turned down and the angle appears to be the same but I will have to make a slight modification to the stock when I re-finish it so as to allow the bolt handle to clear the wood properly, nothing major.

The hunt continues for the parts I still require.

Excellent news! I found a seller in the US who is going to sell me the following:

-Gewehr 98 barrel both with front sight and Lange sight complete and matching
-Matching front and rear band
-Rear sling swivel base with screws
-Matching hand guard (walnut)

All at a very attractive price for the package.

That leaves just the cleaning rod, scope mounts, and scope left.

I've got a 1916 Berlin GEW 98 sporter still in 8mm and it shoots great. It has a Bishop stock and Boyd trigger with about a 2lb pull and Burris Fulfield 1.75 to 5 scope. We should compare serial numbers maybe they are related :)

well the seller is interested in doing this the legal proper way so does anyone know or is willing to help me out with the legal paper work of importing a firearm part such as my 29" barrel ? I would really hate for the project to die after getting this far.

Thanks guys.
