SKS dust cover question

The SKS is designed to outlast you, your children, your grandchildren, and western imperialism in general. People have torture tested them for tens of thousands of rounds and like the AK, they just keep on ticking.

I would honestly not worry about it. If you are going to blast crates of ammo through one, it's probably a refurb and not an overly collectible SKS anyhow. The gun costs the same, if not less, than the crate of ammo.

Just enjoy the trigger time and try not to worry about it. You should see what some of the SKS rifles in Vietnam looked like after 4 or 5 years use in the jungle before being captured - yet they all still worked, by and large.

IMHO, the commonly sold buffers serve more to keep the recoil spring centred to arguably improve accuracy. I don't think it increases longevity much, if at all.

Thanks for the info, gents.

Sorry, I should have explained a bit more. I was thinking about mounting a scope on the dust (reciever) cover without the locking screws on the sides. Just wondering if the cover will get losser as more rounds are fired. I guess it would be at the pin? Oblong the hole, or curve the pin a bit to make the cover losser? Has anyone noticed if their cover is more loose now than when they bought the gun?

I do think the bolt does hit the rear of the cover (edit, sorry, I'm thinking of the carrier and said bolt by mistake). I can see how a buffer would take away the shock, but I think contact would still be there?

The bolt doesn't hit the rear of the cover. The spring guide is too long to allow that to happen, for starters.

Also, the gun is sufficiently robust. Stop worrying.

As for aftermarket covers - some are made cheaper than others. The cast ones are crap - most are cast.

The screws you refer to can and will dent and mar the receiver.

If you're going to bugger up the receiver, why not just drill and tap it with the Choate mount and be done with it? It's a much better mount anyhow.

Alternately, get a POSP type mount?

Cover scope mounts dont hold a zero and will disappoint you. Look at a PSO scope mount or a scout scope mount.

Well, I didn't realize buffers are irrelevant, I guess I can dig mine out and throw it away. Nobody seems to accept that the gas system is working at full power and then some on an SKS. Take a look at this:

Well they may help, but the cover ones "I think do more damage then good" The bolt carrier should connect the reciever, not the cover. By adding the buffer in the cover the carrier will now hit the cover "which it was not designed for" I have seen recieer buffer out there and think they would be better.

Heres apic of were the buffer should be

I'll have to take a look at my rifle and see what's going on there with the buffer, I don't see how any buffer would be marketed if - you know, it was going to destroy the rifle it was marketed for, but . . . Anyways, I am going to try the gas cylinder modification as soon as I get all the pieces in one place.

^thanks for the link, didn't know about them - buffers sold out, if they even ship to Canada. . . :(

AND?

You linked to a guy drilling holes in his gas cover to take away positive ejection so his re-loadable brass with cast bullets is more retrievable - how is that relevant?

He's not using mispec ammo and has modded his gun substantially, AND it's a Yugo 59/66, not a standard SKS.

Did you link to the right post? I thought we were talking about buffers?
