i notice that more people have the G19 instead of the G17. is there really a big difference in the overall size since the G19 in canada has to get stuck with a longer-than-normal-G19 barrel?

i've only held a G17 in a store, and fired a G21 - and from what i can read, those two have a noticeable difference in overall size

No, far more people have 17s than 19s. 19s are either 12(6) and prohibited or at least a couple hundred dollars more than a 17 with the longer aftermarket barrel.

There's only about a 1/2" difference in the length of the slide and butt between the two models.

Is it worth the cost? That's up to you. I own both models and generally prefer to shoot the 17. If we were permitted CCW by our overlords, the 19 is a great gun to carry. It's small enough to conceal easily and large enough to be easy to shoot well.

G19 is the same gun as the G17 except a little shorter in the butt and barrel/slide, unless you are not 12.6 and you have to have a little barrel protruding. It would be a better carry gun that the G17 in its original congfiguration.

I would think there are a lot more G17's arounfd than G19's.

The G21 is the large frame Glock and is quite a bit bigger that either of these guns, especially in the grip.

I prefer the G19 but it is only slightly shorter than the G17. I seem to shoot it better but it could be the aftermarket barrel i have making it slightly more accurate.

For the $$$, go with the G17. A good used G17 goes for ~$650 a G19 goes for ~$850+

I find the larger subcompacts are my favorite, G29 or G30. I not a fan of the G26, at least not with the inch of barrell sticking out the front. A G26 (12.6) would be nice to have!

personally, i'm most likely going to end up with a G34 (plan on getting into IPSC and IDPA), but i'm wondering about the plan-B, that being the G17 or the G19. could be that more people DO have the G17 but i've only noticed the G19 pop up in threads. agree that a normal G19 would be 12-6, which makes me wonder if the Canadianized G19 ends up being nearly the same as a G17 to begin with.

If you plan on getting into IPSC, be advised the Glock 34 is not Production legal. You could use it in Standard but shooting Minor would be a drag. Its fine for IDPA in Stock Service Pistol or Enhanced Service Pistol though.

The size is different. In my view the feel is a lot different as well. I really like the GLOCK 19. Buy one. You will be very happy with it.

I shot mostly SIG for years. Over the last year I have shot almost all GLOCK 19. I wish I would have bought one earlier. I used to get on the "GLOCK 17 is basically the same" bandwagon as well. I got off that when I started shooting 19's though. GLOCK 17 is o.k., it is a very decent gun, but I like something a little smaller. My pistols right now are SIG 228, 229, 239, HK P2000 and GLOCK 19. I've bought and sold a ton of guns, and I've shot most of the rest. I know what I like. GLOCK 19. Night sights. 3.5 connector. IMHO it's hard to come up with something funner and more satisfying to take the range on the weekends. It will command you to take it out the safe and into the case week after week... and you will obey! (trust me!)

Restricted GLOCK 19 is a great looking gun.
Check out my GLOCK 19 vids (and others) on Youtube. Love it! http://www.youtube.com/user/Ghostie604#p/u/10/lRoLp98cMKA

Actually,
I MUCH prefer a Glock G23/G27,
with 9mm and .357 SIG caliber conversion barrels.

You can drop a 9mm conversion barrel into a G23/G27 with only a 9mm mag,
or drop in a .357 SIG conversion barrel with no mag change.

You can't shoot .40 or .357 SIG in a G19 unless you swap out to a .40 slide as well.

You can load .40 ammunition down to match 9mm ballistics,
but you can't load 9mm UP to match .40 or .357 SIG ballistics
[ at least not if you are sane]

SO,
the G23/G27 pistols are just that much more versatile.
BTDT,
sold all my 9mm Glocks,
and now shoot only the .40 Glocks ...
with caliber conversion barrels.

If I could have only ONE pistol,
it would be a G23 with caliber conversion barrels.
This would be the most practical, versatile pistol on the planet.

If I could have only TWO pistols,
they would be a G35 and a G27,
again with caliber conversion barrels.
This way, with the G35, I have a much better Tactical/Match/Game pistol,
and with the G27, a slightly more concealable CCW/real world pistol.

The palm swell on the 19 is higher than on the 17. It doesn't just have 1/2" chopped off of the bottom. The difference is higher up in the grip. I have smaller hands, and find that the 19 fits better than the 17. That's why I have two (both 12-6)!

Be aware of the rule restrictions of IPSC, USPSA, and IDPA. If you're buying this Glock primarily for competition, be sure to buy the right one for the division that you prefer to compete in.

I especially like the 19, and I like the 34 too, but neither the 34 nor any aftermarket-barrelled 19 is welcome in IPSC Production, for example. Both would fit into IPSC Standard. For IPSC Production, the 17 is the Glock to buy.

If your hands are about the same size as his, and mine.

On the other hand, if you have big hands, you might prefer the longer grip of the 17/34.

You really should hold them both before you buy either of them.

ya, this (34 / 17 / 19) Glock would be bought PRIMARILY for IPSC competition (and of course trigger time at the local range, and basically my main practice / learning firearm). so i admit that i didn't realize that the G34 was NOT good for Production class - thanks for pointing that out! i was mostly considering / comparing the 17 and 19 as plan-B in case the 34 is too expensive or too hard to get (low stock / long wait time / etc). but being that it isn't IPSC Prod, i guess that may make the 17 my plan-A instead of the 34. and if the 19 and 34 are classed equally, i guess that takes the 19 out of the picture entirely (that barrel looks fugly sticking out, and i have big hands - the G21 felt like it fit me very well, not cramped or excessive at all)

Glock 19

I just got me a Glock 19 in OD green with the canadaian legal stainless Storm Lake Barrel from Questar and I love it! Shoots great, feels great and the barrel only sticks out not even half an inch and that dont bother me at all. Although I would recommend trying one if it is possible before buying, I did and thats why I bought mine! lol

just for general information,
an aftermarket G17/G22 guide rod and spring will stick out the slide of a G19/G23 just a bit less than the Restricted length barrel. My G17/G22 Harrts mercury filled guide rod, and Clone guide rod with removable round spring both looked good, and functioned perfectly in my G23.

try before you buy. The non prohib 19's are accurate, i find mine to be more accurate then my glock 17 with a stock barrel. It is quite a bit smaller but it all comes down to a choice.

try before you buy.

i am definitely going to have to do that. i've shot a G21 and found the fit to be quite nice and comfy, and only handled a G17 in a store. i'll have to see what i can wrap my hands around this saturday (tomorrow). doesn't seem like anyone around here has a G34, so hopefully at least a G17 will give me a better feel for the size.

seems the Ottawa area sucks for gun shops and places to try - there's only 2-3 that i'm aware of that would carry handguns.
