If CCW was granted, have you thought about what you would carry?

My p226 would be my first choice. If environmental conditions prevented me from carrying it, I'd probably carry a PPK, but would still rather my P226. I love my Sig. In fact I'm going to go hug it right now.

MP5K - In the trigger case.

If we work very hard at it we will get CCW (its already legel, just very hard to get), it may take some time but I believe it is possible. The long gun registry is almost gone and how many said that will never be scrapped.

I think to start the ball rolling we should fight to make it easier to get a wilderness carry permit. Anyone who is an outdoorsman should have the right to be able to effectively protect themselves in the bush.

as is said oftain, its baby steps that will bring us to our end goal.

I think you're right about the baby steps and that maybe this is doable someday. I think handgun hunting might be another thing to pursue on the way. If I could pick a gun to carry I think I'd go with a Colt Delta Elite.

Probably nothing. I'd prefer Castle Doctrine over CCW anyways. Maybe a compact Glock 26 or something, but they'd need to eliminate the barrel length restrictions before that would happen.

Back in South Africa I used to carry a 38 special snub-nosed revolver in an ankle holster. Pros are that it's small and easy to carry. Cons are that it's only 5 rounds, not very accurate and an ankle holster takes a while to get to.

My choice now would be a compact Glock .40 with hollow points in a waist holster. As a Glock has no external safety I like the Sherpa Blackhawk holsters with the release tab so it's difficult for a perp to grab your gun from you in an altercation.

I should also add that carrying a gun can be tiring not just in the physical sense but in the mental sense as a much greater degree of alertness and situational awareness is required to carry a gun responsibly.

In South Africa it was necessary for safety reasons but here I think if it were legal I would carry on the odd occasion but probably not every day.

It would be fun though – if only to make the antis wet themselves :p

I would either carry a S&W .500 magnum or an old school flintlock pistol. It may not be pratical but its cool.

I've carried concealed (overseas) for some time, on and off, and here is my modest experience:
1) Weight matters, a lot
2) Size doesn't
3) You will forget you are carrying and you will treat the gun like a cellphone or notebook and you will do dumb things (see #4 for some examples)
4) Driving a car is a problem, the gun is always on the way or unreachable, if you put it on the side seat never stays on the same place or worst, somebody can grab it. If you put it between your legs sooner or later you will forget you have it there and when you step out of the car, it will go flying away just like the cellphones. Don't put it in the glove compartment! if you need to show your insurance or other document to the police and reach for it (the document, not the pistol) in the glove compartment, they will shoot first and ask later.

I've carried a Smith Wesson N frame 357 with a 4" barrel, a Taurus PT-92 and even a Ruger single six with a 6" barrel when I had nothing else; nobody ever noticed I was carrying as long they were not expecting it.

For me it would def be something in .45 Auto. So if CCW was granted tomorrow I would carry my Series 80 Gold Cup NM. Ideally though, I would go for a Colt commander or something similar in size from Para Ordnance, sticking with the 1911 design.

Cheers,
Jacko

It would be really nice if we can hunt with handguns. It would make sense even to have a handgun to dispatch when bow hunting. But who knows if that will ever happen. Wilderness protection another important use. And yes they do issue permits for that but very few. What I wish for and what reality is are very different things.

There are some States that allow open carry and now people are openly showing their fire arms (if their State allows it) in restaurants, because they can not have them concealed when attending such establishments. It is hard to believe that Texas is one of the States that does not allow open carry. Mind you they have many more privileges & rights than we do when it comes to guns.
