Ok guys, First, please no battles. I am considering a new rifle. The objective is FUN. I am not concened with sniper grade accurracy. Most shooting will be at 50 to 100 yards. I have narrowed the choice to 3. The caliber because I am a cheap SOB is 7.62 by 39.

After a lot of study and reading I have narrowed the field to:
Ruger Mini 30: most expensive, stainless steel, reliable, reasonable accuracy in the new models.
CZ 58 NON restricted: Moderate price, requires special mount. NOT stainless
reasonable......good (?) battle field accuracy.
SKS Russian variant: Cheap, Tapco stocks available, harder to clean VS CZ(?)
the least accurate of the three........I think.

Here is the criteria:
2.5 to 3" MOA 100yards. I want to blast away:D
EASY to clean as the ammo is corrosive.
Mounting a red dot sight is a requirement ####ty eyes.... so added cost.

Each rifle has advantages. I have 1000.00 bucks to spend. You guys shoot more than I.

Thanks Guys!

My CZ 858 gives me the most amount of fun for the money. Just got a new one few days ago. With iron sights 2" groups at 100 yards were not too hard to achieve. I am hoping to add a scope and then see what this rifle is really capable of. Lots of good accessories are available now in Canada and US as well. For $1000 bucks you can do a lot with this rifle.

Which rifle?

If t'were me, I'd forget about the Ruger - too much cash for the quality and accuracy, plus the fact that the Mini-14 and 30 are firmly in the anti's sights for prohib status. As far as CZ vs. SKS, the CZ is most likely the better quality gun, and should be slightly more accurate, although there are some surprisingly accurate Russky SKS out there. The SKS will let you buy more ammo, and there are more aftermarket toys out there. I'd be hard pressed to decide between the two. If you can handle them both, get the one that's most comfortable.

2.5-3.0 MOA may be difficult to achieve with any of those rifles, considering the ammo available and individual variation in rifles. Obviously, some rifles will shoot better, some worse.

If all you're doing is blasting away, it won't make much difference if your rifle is capable of shooting 2 MOA or 4 MOA.

My choice would be the VZ. If you can't decide, just buy the SKS and blast away.

SKS w/ Choate Scope mount .... Barska or NcStar compact scope ... 3 cases of Suplus ... grin on your face .. priceless

It seems that the one we hear about all the time is the evil Mini-14 just like Marc Lepine used. Haven't specifically heard the SKS or CZ mentioned, but I could be wrong.

The registry WAS the reaction to LeDouchebag, if they didn't restrict it then, it's not specifically from that incident, in anyone's crosshairs now.

If they go after it, it's due to it being a centerfire semi-auto, which shoots a fairly inexpensive calibre, and has the possibility of "high capacity" (their word) magazines. That criteria, of course, squarely brings it in league with the sks and cz. Their next move is very likely to be to try to restrict or prohib ALL semi-auto centrefires, including Grampa's Rem 7400 and 1100's. It's our job to be sure that they don't get the chance.

Hmmm so far good advice. Sorry if the question has been asked before.....but I am perplexed about the cleaning issue in particular. Is one easier than the other? I hate to sound lazy but I don't want to have to come home and rip the rifle down. Sounds like the ruger........so far is more money than required for my purposes. Both the SKS and CZ seem like great rifles, each have their fans. Is 3" at 100 yards not a reasonable expectation OR is it more likey in one than the other? Thanks again.

SKS and VZ are both easy to clean, slight edge to the VZ. No idea about the Ruger.

You can't make blanket statements about "reasonable" accuracy. Remember, the SKS and VZ were designed as infantry rifles. I have no idea what the actual spec was but that means 4-6 MOA would probably have been considered "acceptable". You're also shooting 40 year old surplus ammo that was never intended to be match quality.

If you're just blasting at the range, you'll never know the difference between a 2 MOA and a 4 MOA rifle. If you want a more "precision" rifle, get one of those.

IMHO SKS is easier to clean, And a chrome lined bore is even nicer, One turn of a little latch and in 2 seconds the action is completley dissasembled

Good point Stevo............this is exactly why I posted the thread. Before I buy I want to know what to expect so I am not dissapointed. If I thought I should be getting a certain degree of accuacy and did not I would be wondering if the rifle was a lemon. Thanks again.

You're welcome. Just remember to stock up on ammo. It's not going to get any cheaper or readily available than it is today.

FWIW, my VZs shoot in the 3-4 MOA range. I don't have the patience to see if I can tighten my groups up.;) I haven't shot my SKSs in so long, I can't remember how well they shoot.

You can't go wrong with one of the new Chinese SKSs or one of the good Russian refurbs.

Where did you get the forearm grips with the picitinny rails. I will need something along that line as well.

The bottom rifle has the old-version NEA lower handguard while the upper has the newest model. Both types are available right now from GP Tactical. Awesome price on the older version. Both come with the railed upper handguard.

The bottom one has the single built-in rail segment while the top one has add-on rail pieces available. Like this:
