Notice to S&W M&P 15-22 Rifle Owners

Jeezus, I wish our gun orgs had the financial backing that the NRA does in the US. If they did, I'm sure they'd be fighting this bullshyt.

It's a restricted RIMFIRE firearm to begin with, so who gives a damn whether the mags are interchangeable between the rifle/pistol versions?

I wonder if someone with the means to take it to court would win, based on the fact that rimfire firearms are exempt from the magazine limits?

The problem here is that it appears that S&W always intended and built the magazine for their handgun AND their rifle so they themselves acknowledged and confirmed it was a "handgun" magazine.

The issue never really came up until S&W started finally shipping the Pistol version of the firearm and then it all came to light.

Wrong . It is rimfire rifle mags that are exempt

So really, this only applies to S&W magazines, so if a 3rd party company (butler creek, magpul or someone) comes out with a 25 rounder for the RIFLE and advertise it for the RIFLE, then life is good no?

Correct... it actually applies specifically to the S&W Part# mentioned in my original post.

The Black Dog 50 round drum magazine for the S&W M&P 15-22 is NOT affected by this ruling.

Is there any reason, based in the law as it is written, that would prevent this interpretation from being applied to non S&W made magazines?
As mentionned, the Black Dog magazine is not mentionned in the ruling - but is there any legal reason that it, too, could not be subject to a ruling?
Good thing that Ruger does not manufacture and promote a large magazine for the rifle and pistol versions of its 10/22s.
I wonder if all owners of S&W M&P 15-22s will be receiving registered letters informing them that they may be in possession of prohibited devices, and describing their options for dealing with the situation?
 
The absurdities of the Firearms Act are really getting unbearable. Does anyone know whether this pistol/rifle magazine issue could be remedied by an OIC? Are we really condemned to RCMP interpretations of a vague and contradictory statute? (Don't get me started on the definition of "variant" :mad:)

drop in 10 round limiter, would that be legal or considered not permanent?

Magazine restrictions are based on the firearm for which the magazine is designed and manufactured. A magazine, without a firearm, can be a prohibited device.

The LAR magazine ruling cleared the way for these pistol magazines to be used in AR type rifles.
Similarly, 10 round Beretta pistol magazines can be used in Beretta carbines.

This time the ruling worked the other way.

I would assume that if this interpretation stands, the S&W magazines could be blocked to 10 rounds. This principle has applied to other magazines.

It's true.

The Firearms Lab has a hard on for this gun from day 1.

They kept it in limbo for a year, then deemed it restricted.

Now, they come up with an interpretation of the law that says that the magazine is actually a pistol mag.

It's yet another step in the death by 1000 cuts strategy that they are pursuing.
 
I believe that they updated the magazine from the original rifles with all the problems. Does anyone know if the old and new ones have the same part # ?

I checked the S&W website, there are 3 mags available.

The 25 rounder that came with the gun is now apparently prohib.

There is the same 25 round length mag, pinned to 10 rounds, with a blue follower and no load assist.

There is a short 10 round mag.


Regardless of magazine updates to the original, its still the same SKU/part # for all the 25 rounders now consider prohib.
