Notice to S&W M&P 15-22 Rifle Owners

Canada is a safer place today. Just recieved my legal 50 rd. drum from Questar(fast delivery), so I can get rid of my 25rd. 'Prohibitted Device' for my 15-22. We can all sleep peacefully tonight, and I can have twice the fun at the range, tomorrow!

Thank you for acting responsibly. ;)

Never took the time to red all the posts.... but I am not aware of the legislation which gives authority for the RCMP to perform all these somewhat arbitrary classifications... I would appreciate a PM with a copy of your posting info in the event I don't get back to this thread. Much appreciated.

Calling CFO and hearing that there is no such information in their system and talking to weapons technician, who stated there is no such limitation on the 22LR Mags has given me assurance.

I phoned Ottawa and talked to a weapons tech, she told me they would be limited to 10 rounds, so I guess they don't know whats going on either.

I'm awash with warm & fuzzy ---but my thumb hurts like hell , & I can't get the carbon off my thumb from loading the f'***er!!
Wonder what caffeine gov't guzzler came up with this latest piece of trash.
Thanks for making the nation safer 1 mag @ a time !!!!H:S:

Smith an wesson sent me 2 short and 2 long 10 round mags for FREE! while looking at the long mag i noticed 4 differences from the 25 round mag, the pin at 10 rounds, the blue follower, absence of the thumb peace for loading and the stamp of 10 rounds.
so my question is can I cut out the pin and insert the thumb peace from my old mags making it a 25 round mag that looks like a 10? it would be a different part # and stamp.
Let me know the deal with this attempt around the situation.

In the mail they payed the postage too. I was just nice to them and they asked me not to tell everyone who has a 1522 but I want you guys to have the legal gear if this prohibited device situation is going to fruition.

and back to my first question can I mod the long mag stamped with 10 round by removing the pin and adding the ez load nob ? will this be legal?

That would be maufacturing a prohibited device...... Which is punishable with jail time......

Hate to tell you this, but what you are attempting to do is illegal. There is no way "around the situation". If S&W has produced a pistol that uses the same mag that happens to fit the rifle too then it's going to have to be limited to 10 rounds whether it started out as a pistol or rifle mag. You can blame S&W for that.

Seriously, you should just stop posting now.

Actually the way you have stated this is not true.

You can blame S&W for stating that the magazine is made for both the rifle and the pistol. That is where this possible problem comes from.

But just want to put this out there that no dealers around here have been told to pull their inventory of magazines or for that matter even been contacted at all about this.

I thought that's what I was saying... anyway it's very confusing the way the laws are written and interpreted.

Not true... if the magazine had started out as a rifle magazine (as defined by Canadian law) then there would be no issue here. The problem is that the magazine started out as BOTH a handgun and a rifle magazine because that is how S&W designed and manufactured it... based on that the RCMP ruled that the magazine is limited to 10 rounds because the law in Canada limits even rim-fire handgun magazines to ten rounds maximum.

This is a sort of unique (until now) situation. In the past a manufacturer creates rifle (or handgun) and designs the magazine for that item. They later create a pistol version of the rifle... but that does not change the status of the magazine unless they design a magazine specifically for that pistol. In the S&W case the manufacturer designed both the pistol and rifle right from the start and created the magazine for BOTH... thus the phrase "dual purpose magazine" and thus the problem created in this case.

so why were the 25 rounders allowed to be sold in the first place?

Doubt that anyone here can answer your question.

But why don't you call the RCMP Firearms Investigative & Enforcement Services Directorate and ask them? Let us know their response.

don't really care that much, I don't own one of the guns so it's nothing I am going to lose sleep over. just curious

so why were the 25 rounders allowed to be sold in the first place?

I can only "guess" but I expect that it wasn't noticed initially.

The first importations were the 15-22 rifles and the magazine was assumed to be a rifle magazine... certainly that was what we thought and I can only assume that's what the other importers believed as well. It never occurred to any of us that the magazines had been "designed and manufactered" for BOTH the rifle and the handgun versions of the firearm.

It wasn't until last May/June that the issue arose when the first 15-22 pistols arrived in country. I expect that it was then that RCMP examined the magazines and realized that the 25 round magazine was also a handgun magazine by Canadian definition and at that time they were forced to make a ruling... which we questioned at that time. It took until October for them to finalize that decision and notify us.

This is not the first time that this type of retroactive examination has occurred. Believe me when I say that GUN OWNERS DO NOT WANT the RCMP to pre-examine EVERYTHING before it's allowed in the country... the backlog would take years and we'd never see any "new" stuff without first waiting years to get it "approved" for importation.

We've already seen serious delays in approvals over the past year as RCMP now want to examine pretty much anything that they believe might be in question... this is causing serious delays.
