What's with the targets lately?

Hum .... No.

Hit 5rds on a 12"x12" @ 1200y and that's even a target worth showing.

Like I said. If you just wana shoot 100m all day, giver. Do your load development there. If you wana shoot long distance and be accurate... Than you test at distance.

The first part of load development is to determine if a given load has the potential to be a long range performer. If your 100 yard group measures 2" are you going to try it again at 500 or a 1000? I accept the idea that some bullets go to sleep for the first few hundred yards, but I don't wast my time with a 2 MOA load at long range.

A group that stays on an 8.5"X11" target at 1200 yards isn't going to look very impressive when posted, but the half MOA group at 100 that you shot first not only looks good on the net, but tells you, the shooter, that it warrants further attention. Besides, extreme long range groups are not a true measure of the rifle/load's accuracy potential. While it is true that sub MOA accuracy is necessary to shoot a tight group at extended ranges; at those ranges the group is not indicative of what the rifle/load is capable of, it is a measure of what the marksman is capable of. In short range benchrest shooting, the idea is to remove the human element from the shooting to the extent possible, but at extended ranges; it is the human element that makes a tight group possible.

If you are talking competitive benchrest, you are mistaken. The equipment gets you on the playing field, the rest is all human element, ie gun handling and wind reading. In short, like all precision rifle competitions, benchrest is a wind reading contest at the end of the day.

I wasn't refering to competition, but where load development is being worked up by Joe Average. If the wind is blowing, we simply turn the bench and shoot in another direction. Mirage is a much bigger problem when attempting to measure the accuracy potential of the rifle and components.

Sorry,I thought you were refering to working up loads at long range, in my experience that doesn't work. Certainly any load that you intend to use long term must be tested at distance, and there is no substitue for doing so.

The big red flag for me is the "My bla bla bla shoots bla bla bla all day long". As soon as I see those three words "all day long", the crap detector goes into full code red, and I stop reading.

I remember a 5 shot group that I was pretty happy with. It was 3/4" (CTC) @100y from a $150. M1 Garand. I shot only five because that was what was left in the (commercial) box (of twenty).

All I ever heard was: "Where are the other three rounds?" :kickInTheNuts:

I have an old trapdoor Springfield that will consistently shoot 5-shot groups measuring less than .1". The only problem I have is truly accurately measuring the groups, because the powder burns on the paper make it hard to measure.

If you can hit a Coyote on a full run,who gives a #### if it shoots in the same hole! You will not have time to set up your rests and sand bags before he is gone.I love to watch off hand shooters now that is talent, which I don't have.

While I share some of the sentiments expressed in this thread, isn't it time to just relax a bit ? I mean, really, why get worked up because someone is happy to have shot a good group at 100 m and has taken the trouble to photograph and post it here ? I say 'good on you' - at least you are getting out to the range and shooting.

Much of this picky stuff kinda reminds me of the 'armchair experts' who always seem to know lots about a given subject but who prefer to dump on others rather than put all that technical knowledge to some use either at the subject themselves or, at least, coaching others who are trying to learn how to improve their skills.

Finally, if someone posts a pic of a target you don't like then simply move on - no one forces you to read or look.

Vent Mode Off.

lol. Welcome to the Internet.

No one is gona crap on a guy for posting a 100m group. This thread is just a bunch of us arguing about what we wana see more of.

Speaking of pansies, why should winter bother you. And forget about this scope stuff - start using apertures.

YOu can join me and do some long range shooting ... it's only -60 without the windchill the last month and a half ... ;) :p

I just have to say that any of my bla bla bla's (except shotguns) will shoot under 4 MOA all day long. Really, no BS! :)

Since we're posting groups, I'll throw one in the ring. I did this about 5 years ago with my Savage model 10 FPLE in .223 using Winchester White Box.
