What makes these rifles so special that they command such a high price?

Just look like a non restricted semi auto in .308 or .223, and there are numerous non restricted .223's now, and at least one non restricted .308 semi now....

Never understood the appeal! I could give a damn about Ak's, and I think valmets are ridiculous looking guns! But hey, if someone wants to drop 3g's of their cash on one, who am I to say!!

Yeah, but so what? :)

They shoot bullets just like any rifle. I doubt they do it any better than a Swiss Arms or some other non restricted semi.:p

rarity makes almost anything valuable. why buy a original SAA colt when a repo is way cheaper? they both work the same and shoot bullets the same, new one might even be more accurate

Never understood anyone paying that price. I could see 1000 for one in 7.62x39. And even then a CZ 858 its a better rifle for less.

CZ 858 its a better rifle...

To answer the original question:

Out of dozens of different countries that made AK's, Valmet made the highest quality variants by far. If you ever handled one side by side with a regular AK, you'd know what i mean.
AK is considered by majority of people in the world to be the best assault rifle ever designed.
Using the above points one can draw a conclusion that Valmets are the best assault rifles in existence today.

The 2 Valmets (Hunter and M78) are the ONLY non-prohib AK's in Canada. Valmet factory closed down over 20 years ago. No new rifles have been made since. Hunters and M78's are rare everywhere (not just Canada) and are no longer importable.
All of the above explains the high price tag.

YOU may not like the AK platform for whatever reason (and therefore disagree with the first point), but that doesn't mean that everyone feels the same way.
Oh, and BTW. Valmet hunter is a variant with sporting furniture. Check out pictures on Valmet.org if you want to see the non-sporting models (most of which are prohib along with the other AK's)

In the marketplace immediately following C-68, I could see the inflated price for the M78. I have owned a couple M78s, and while they were fun at the time due to the "its non-restricted" novelty. this wore off big time when the first generation of non-restricted semis came out in the SL8, and Blue Star.

I have owned a couple hunters as well. The same goes for them, but they were less cool, but more portable then the M78 at the time.

Why on earth some still ask the high prices is beyond me. The only thing I can guess is that they are of the mindset " I payed X for it, so I am never going to sell it for less then X".

In terms of portability, and practicality, the 858 is a better rifle then the M78 IMO. Hands down. Comparing the x39 or 223 versions of each of course. And this assessment is assuming they are the same price.

No kidding, those ads usually have numerous bumps and btts under them.
And reposts to make it look like there are no new BTTs.

In today's market, with today's available product line, I would say a better 223/7.62x39 version could be had for less then 1K in the VZ858. For the 308 version, I would say that a better rifle can be had in the M305 for 400 or whatever they go for now. Maybe add up to a grand for a pistol grip. For the 3006 versions of the hunters, on the other hand, there probably isn't a comparable rifle on the market.

Its not a fair comparison - M78 is a LMG and VZ58 is an assault rifle. Of course a LMG is going to be less portable. A fair comparison would be Valmet M76 or Sako RK95 VS Cz858/Vz58. Valmet/Sako would win every time, in every category except price and maybe weight (minor difference). Its silly to even compare the two -they're in a totally different league as far as quality goes.

Says who? As far as I know I can register a new (to Canada) one without a problem. I dont see how a non-restricted rifle can be non-importable.

Says US State Department. Rifles with more than 2 evil features (bayo lug, pistol grip, mil caliber, detach mag, bipod etc) are a no-no. Hunters MIGHT get through, but M78 is a definite "no".

.

Agreed as far as the functional difference. I am loosely comparing on usability/practicality in Canada. The Valmet M76 or Sako RK95 of course looses handily here due to legislation. Also, remember, the long barreled non-restricted 858 is closer to a LMG as well.

In terms of look and feel, yeah, the Valmets are way ahead of the 858s. In terms of accuracy, they are pretty close in my experience, though most all of my 858 experience is what I observe at the range lanes next to me.
