Hey everyone
I was thinking about picking up two Mosin Nagants recently. One I intend to keep the way it is, wood and all, but the other one, which I want to use for deer hunting, I intend to sporterize with an ATI Monte Carlo synthetic stock and a receiver scope mount.
Now, as we all know, the straight bolt handle is kind of an issue here, and I was wondering if anyone knew a place where I could get it bent or purchase a different bolt handle or something.
(Without buying a much more expensive sniper Mosin with a pre-bent bolt, etc)

Any recommendations for a good receiver tap & drill scope mount?

I really like what this guy did to his M44, and hope to do something similar:

Thanks everyone!

Am I in for some abuse or are you just trying to get your post-count up?

Wrong sub-forum? (I know some milsurpers don't like sporterizing)

I will be more than happy to help

This is how you do it. you will need a metal saw (bandsaw or hacksaw) a center drill. a 5/16 drill, a 3/8 bolt about 6 inches long, you want the one that has a small amount of thread and a long unthreaded portion, a 3/8-16 tap, a vice and a source of a lot of heat (oxy torch). #1 cut the knob off the bolt handle #2 cut the stub of handle off.#3 center drill in the center of where the bolt handle used to be on the knob and on the bolt body. #4 drill with the 5/16 drill in the same place as #3 DO NOT drill into the firing pin channel of the bolt body.#5 tap both holes from #4 with the 3/8-16 tap. #6 with your torch and vice bend the 3/8-16 bolt just behind the threaded portion bend it until you like the look. #7 thread the bolt into the bolt body and with it installed in the rifle decide on the angle and length that you want. #8 cut the 3/8-16 bolt at the length you decided on in step #7. #9 using a die or a lathe thread the end of the bolt you just cut and screw on the knob. #10 play with the rifle until you are 100% sure you are in love with the length and angle you can loctite the threads or have it tig welded for abot 10 bucks at a welding school. Enjoy your Mosin they kick a$$. Pm me or post with questions. the only question not allowed is will I do it for you (NO).

yes the rocksolid

rocksolid industries is the only one that I can reccomend without hesitation . I know you didn't ask but as far as replacement stocks go I would stay away from ATI I bought one for my #4 mark 1 and it was a piece of sh!t.

I'd get a cheap M44, a plastic stock, bed it and do this mod on the bolt.

That's about it.

Do you know where I can get one of those Rocksolid Industries mounts? Also, where do I get one of those 3/8 bolts you talked about?
As you have probably figured, I'm completely new to sporterizing/modifying Mosins (or any milsurps, really)

I don't really need a high-tech stock (It's a >$200 rifle, after all). The ones ATI has for the Mosin are cheap, I like their looks and they seem to fairly well received on the web. What are you sporting, you seem to have experience with sporter Mosins?

Interesting, didn't even know that was possible. I have to consider that... But that doesn't solve my problem of needing to get the bolt bent in order to mount a scope.

Yeah, a half decent gunsmith could bend it for you, don't pay too much though.

To be honest I'd just stick a good set of peep sights mounted right on the front end of the receiver.

the scope mount is at

w w w dot rocksolidind dot com i would hotlink it for you but it is not allowed as they are not a site sponsor. You can probably get the bolt at home depot or a fastener supply house. I just got mine from the company stores ssh dont tell anyone lol.

Not trying to be a smart ass but...

You could save money and time, and probably get better hunting results, by buying a brand new Savage 200...

I love savages too but

they lack the cool factor of a surplus rifle. I like a rifle that if it could talk would have some stories to tell. I have a savage and will buy another real soon to bang coyotes. but my moose gun is a mosin with a #4 mk1 as back up. Retired soldiers need jobs too.

All kidding aside, I "sporterized" a mosin 91/30 action quite a few years back. I parkerized the entire rifle, had a gunsmith cut the barrel to 19.5" and put it in a wood stock I got from Numrich (?) or E-Gunparts.com.

It cost me about $250-300 all in not including my time.

The best part is that I swapped it and a SKS-D for a Breda M1 Garand in minty shape.

I had a night like that once

I started drinking in Germany and woke up in a park in the Czech republic. Some guy with a dog thought I was dead. Aah memories.

yup

sks canuck gives whiskey and smokes to people who do good milsurp work. Just PM him to get yours when your rifle is done. LOL. I like the raccoon picture because the smoke is still burning. The coon looks comfy too.
