Moose shot at 1100 yards

Here is the moose shooters Youtube page, lots of hunting videos.

Maybe we should analyze each one and then tear him a new one each time we find something that doesn't match up to our personal ethics ;)

Kidding of course...

There is no way that a spined big game animal can evade the hunter. Therefore, an animal that is spined, even at long range will suffer no longer than it takes the hunter to get to him and finish the job.

What we should be concerned about is, "Was it legal?"
The answer is yes.

Would have I attempted it?
No, because that's not the type of hunting that turns my crank.

But I believe its a mistake to vilify the legal actions of others in the field when those actions are at odds with the way we do things.

Again, we should confine discussions of ethics to what is legal, and to the practices that have a reasonable expectation of success for individual involved, based on his experience and equipment. What is ethical for you may be beyond my ability so would be unethical for me to attempt, what is ethical for me, might not be within the ability of someone else.

When we say you have to hunt the way I do, because I know what’s right, we’re on a slippery slope.

As for the antis, they are irrelevant. If they had their way there would be no hunting, ethics doesn't enter the equation. As for the perception of cruelty, that must be balanced with the reality of living in nature with nothing more than you were born with, not from a human perspective.
I don't believe we can only confine the discussion of ethics to legal practices. There are some illegal acts I would consider very ethical.

the bullet path is there, I can follow its arch, the mirage it creates is very easily seen on my screen. the shooter is on the right side of the camera, the path goes from right to left, the natural path of this arch plainly ends at the hip/spine area which indicates a poorly placed but lucky shot. I call it a failure that ended ok. If he was aiming for the heart/lung area he was only off by about 4 feet right and 2 feet high. Is 4.5 feet off a good shot? Maybe from a boat with a .22 and a low power scope.....

Seal hunter... You know, you try to come off as all knowing, but I went back through a whole pile of your posts, and really, there isn't anything of substance in any of them. All you seem to do is pick a topic and then try to pick a fight in said topic. I believe the term for you is "TROLL"

Instead of continually criticising everyone else for everything they say... why don't you offer something... anything... constructive from your own experiences?

And don't forget to back it up, lest another Troll call BS...

BOOMER: well said... very articulate, and no-nonsense. Exactly the way most of the comments offering kudo's to the OP started before the TROLLS started squawking. Watch your backside... there are a few on here looking for an opening to it

Eagleye. I'm good with agreeing to disagree.;) That's better than me agreeing and both of us being wrong.:p:p .........I'm kidding.

Boomer well said.

Like I said, your comments were BS, and the fact remains they still are.

I guess I didn't go far enough back in his history to find a 'hunting post' can someone post a link... then maybe we can critique it...

and again SH, thank you for making my point... useless and negative. Thanks for coming out.

Sniper-T; As Sealhunter said, you are full of s***, and you know it. I have been shooting 1000 yard competitions since 1980. There is an opportunity to shoot offhand at many of these shoots. I have yet to see a shooter, ever, that could keep 100% of his shots offhand on a golf ball at 300 yards, let alone 500. Even from sandbags, a golf ball is a mighty small target at 500, and I would dare say that 60% hits would be pretty darn good for the best shooters. As for the 22 Magnum fabrication, ohhhh, what a tale that is!! You would have to hold the rifle so high that the target would not even be visible in the scope. Sheesh!, you must think we are all idiots! All of a sudden, that 1100 yard moose shot seems tame. EE

EE, and here I though that you gracefully faded into oblivion... no such luck, eh??

Well think about it... you are about as useful as the other Troll.

you want to call BS... post up... anyone can sit back and say no way, nohow, not possible.

c'mon trolls... let's here the things that you've done and seen that you wouldn't believe had you not seen it.

y'know... I've seen a car take a corner too fast, slide into the far curb sideways, and flip a full 360 in the air, landing on the wheels. Call BS if you like... but youtube it... it happens... have you ever seen it?... no...? therefore I must be full of BS.

trolls... either offer proof of your accusations or do what we hoped EE did --> fade into oblivion!

Oh... wait... I already know your retort:

"Sniper: you're full of BS!"

now you don't have to reply... you can make your bedtime before mommy gets upset!

sweet dreams children!

Well how about this...

Post the 1000 yrd trajectory for a .22 magnum and we'll shut up...oops, 960 yrds was it?

I don't overstate or understate my shooting ability.

I was told that I couldn't shoot 5 shots from my 30/30 faster than my buddy could down a beer... but at least these things are within the realm of sanity...
What you claim is proposterous...
by the way, I can down a beer and shoot 5 shots from my 30/30 in about the same time, roughly 2.5 seconds a piece,..sometimes better :D

sniper please explain how 6lbs of energy from a .22 magnum at 900 some odd yard can penetrate to the vitals of a moose? that should clear up who's bsing who. I know a .22 cal air rifle with 5 lbs can not even penetrate a pair of denim jeans, so please please explain how that mighty .22 "magnum" penetrated 13-16 inches of hair, flesh, muscle and fat at nearly 1000 yards. never mind the accuracy that may have well been a hip shot fired at passing aircraft.
Either this tale was meant to amuse its readers or you yourself are a troll. At that range even 308 is performing on a questionable level.

and the few hundred inches of drop...

I wanna know two.

I remember shooting at a small barn roof as a young fella from across a field with a 22 mag. Later we climbed into the loft to see the damage done. To our amazement not all the hits went clean through the tin roof. Some did, but others just left blisters(some blisters had cracks). The distance was far less than 900yds, and the hold over was substantial.

tool; I never said he could keep 100% I said nearly. re-read the post, or at least read it before you further embarass yourself.

and no I don't think anyone is an idiot..aside from the obvious...

I started going back to try and find what sniperT had said, but quickly came to understand he is utterly and completely full of sh1t before I even found the posts, called off the search at one page back.

This got messy. I can't believe there's this much to argue, a guy hit a moose where he didn't intend to, and even if you asked him before the shot if he knew he'd hit the vitals I'd bet anything he'd say no. It was a pot shot, he hit the spine, clearly not where intended, and few of us here endorse those kind of shots. There's just no reason to take that shot in the Fort Nelson area, I lived there as recently as two years ago, a 1100 yard moose shot is beyond unnecessary; they make proper targets for that kind of shooting. The distance certainly wasn't helping his case, where this becomes defensible actions on the part of the hunter makes me scratch my head. The only hunters I see embrace tactics that resemble his are first nations up here, shoot and hope. Generally seen as poor sportsmanship; exactly what that video was.

trajectory... I have no clue... I was in a boat beside them... I wasn't watching where he aimed... I was watching the moose. (as per previous post)

And thanks for that share... I really don't care to know how wide you can open your throat to down a beer... or whatever... congrats to you! I really don't see how that is relevent. Thanks for sharing though!
