Bear Defense 6 inch 870 build...need accessories

The BL 6 has a modified choke the last time I looked at one.. I wanted one for a while everytime I looked at them they basicly sold out before I could blink im getting one right away because they are lots of fun and Ive seen a few people shoot them they are really fun. For Bear nothing is 100 percent you could miss but for something that is small and easy to carry Id pick it over a full size shotgun anyday.. even the ksg that thing looks heavy I rather have something light weight..

I'd rather have somthing I can put to my shoulder to aim faster and reload another round into faster...something with more ammo...something heaver so the recoil isn't crazy...something that could be used to hit the bear with IF thats all I could do...

hears one i built o na 8.5 inch had to pin the stock at the #4 position to make sure it could not go below 26 inch.
Miss that gun should never have sold it.

wow that is super nice! wish I could have one just like that!

I have an 8.5 and it's a ball to shoot,Recoil isn't bad at all because it's heavy for it's size.As for lugging it around not a problem. Single point with a QD on it is the bomb,Both hands free till you want it. A few hundred FPS not going to matter when getting hit with 1oz or so of lead.If your considering getting one Go for it.I love mine

Do you think that the reduced velocity from such a short barrel won't have an impact on how effective your "bear defense rounds" are??

Just asking, I mean it really isn't going to have the same impact as a longer barreled shotgun on such a hard target, no?

Also, out of curiosity, do you like live with bears, or are surrounded by them maybe? Seems like a lot of money to put into a shotgun for "bears" when it's pretty much useless for anything else??

Now, don't get me wrong, they look sweet, and probably are a lot of fun, just wondering as to their usefulness for anything outside of shooting beer cans.

Please feel free to school me. :)

Actually, I have lived in Alberta for over 15 years, I live in the mountains and bears are relocated right from in my town every year. Until I was married and had 3 kids, I lived in the woods. Every Friday, it was pack the jeep and go. I have had over a dozen run ins with bears that were within 50 yards, I shot two bears within this distant, but both these situations were during bear hunting trips. Neither was in self defense. I love a short shotgun for the fun, and the more you practice shooting and reloading, the more naturally the shots come. I feel that 3 shots is enough and if a bear decides that he's coming for you, your not going to get off more than that before he's on you anyway. If you do, they are going to be panicked and erratic shots, they might scare him away, but you probably wont hit anything... I will take agility and control in a short full stocked unit with back up rounds over a hard to control long barreled pistol gripped unit with extra rounds any day of the week. And as far as loss of velocity, 1oz of lead at close distance is going to do the job anyway.... were not talking 100 yards here......

I guess it depends on the circumstances you face, but other than being faced with a bear in the tent I don't think I would opt for an 8” shotgun. I want to hit what I shoot at, I want a standard length magazine, I want to use powerful ammunition, and I want controllable recoil; even when the only ammo I can find might be Federal 3" ounce and a quarter slugs. There are times when you use what you have, rather than what you want.

To my way of thinking the most important aspects of the defensive shotgun are: ruggedness, reliable feeding and firing, fast handling characteristics, a decent trigger, and sights you can see. To this end, your money is better spent towards an action and trigger job if your gun needs one, having the stock fitted to you, and installing sights which are appropriate to your purposes, rather than simply acquiring the smallest package you can arrange.

If you simply want the smallest ###iest shotgun you can arrange, that is a different problem than bear defense.

I've had a few run ins with bears myself over the years... coincidentally, while out in my Jeep in the middle of nowhere as well.. LOL :D So ya, I get what you are driving at.

Actually had one come right up to my tent one night and was sniffing my head through the side of the tent when I woke up. Talk about pucker factor on that one!

I'm still wondering about loss of velocity from a shorter barrel though. Not sure what the numbers are on that and whether it makes any difference. You may be right, at that range it don't matter.

Like I said though, they are ###y looking and lots of fun... Had me half thinking of getting one myself just to play mirror commando with :D :D

I carry a shotgun often in the mountains, and I've actually gone back to a 20 inch 590A1 over an 12.5 inch HP9. Run in with a grizzly changed my mind about low capacity / short barreled shot guns for bear defense. Silly thing is that the 590 is not all much heavier than the stock HP9 - Chinese plastic is heavy!

Hmmm - still can't find that forend anywhere else.

It is standard fitment on the DA 8.5" Grizzly - have asked Canada Ammo if they can sell it separately - they said maybe when the next batch of 8.5"s come in.

If anyone has one of these forends for sale, I will pay a good price if it is in decent condition. PM me please - thanks

the problem with something like this for whatever defense is that in a high-stress situation you are going to be just as likely to blow off a thumb/forefinger that slides too far forward on the 'forend' as you are to hit the bear.

the 8.5 grizzly has a generous lip on the forend to keep your hand sliding forward but those with big hands still need to be careful.

X2
Should your hand slip off the side and in front of the muzzle as you fire, you won't care what the bear does to you, which is just as well because you won't be in any position to stop it.
