Antique Status firearms converted to shoot modern ammunition

 Oh goodie! Two more that think that if we don't ever speak of things, that the system won't find out what goes on.

What a crock of ####!

That would be the same system that issues those letters. They know.

Yeesh.

Ever heard the phrase "Let sleeping dogs lie"?

The guy who coined the phrase likely had friends telling him to leave the dog alone?

Nope. It's pretty much like shouting down anyone that talks about dogs or getting bit by them.

Three grades of stupid below voting Liberal.

Since there seems no shortage of stupid people willing to share their bad advice and 'knowledge', it seems to me that the best thing to do is to stick to the facts, and discuss those things that are legal.

If you come up with any other wisdom, maybe the forum at fuddgunowners.com could use another hand-wringer.

It's legal. No matter what someone told someone you heard about from a guy that knows a fellow....even IF that guy works behind a gun counter.

But if you come up with something factual, feel free.

Cheers

Agreed. The following is a description of a gun for sale listed by someone who I personally know works for CSSA.... Take what you want from it but it makes me wonder when those who should know, don't.

Swiss Vetterli, bolt action, .41 caliber rim fire,no currently manufactured ammunition therefore Antique status no PAL required for purchase.

AS I SAID these threads spreading rumors are harmful! Also harmful is drawing attention to loop holes that obviously go against the spirit and intent of legislation.
Your stupid if you think the new harper government will not try to make hay with their toronto supporters by closing loop holes when they remove the registry!!
Some people just don't think. Short sighted, shallow thinkers.
All the responsible collectors need to consider the posibility of a return to the antique definition of the old legislation!
When that happens I will blame. Those who drew so much attention!
Ask any tax lawyer, loop holes only last as long as it takes for someone to notice and complain!!
The more people use it and flaunt it the more certian it ends!!
Think about it.

These Nervous Nellies.....

We all know that the Firearms Act and related Criminal Code sections were carefully drafted, well thought out and well written.

We all know that the intent and spirit of the antique firearms sections were to allow folks to go armed with a loaded pistol in any area where non-restricted firearms can be discharged.

We all know that this is not a loophole, that it was the intent of the legislators to facilitate going armed.

We all know that no government is ever going to amend the regulations to tighten up controls on these firearms.

Well,

One problem in particular, is that, for some reason, the notion that "ammo not readily available" got pretty good penetration among the populace, while the actual legislation did not.

My understanding is, that this was from a proposed version of the Antique definition, that got published and distributed pretty widely. Apparently it struck a chord, as we've been hearing it ever since, despite the fact that it was NOT actually in the Law as written.

Short of some low life mouth breather doing something stupid and criminal with an antique, they have no real reason to go there. I don't think it'd rate high on the agenda to be dragged out to the Commons floor, either.

Really. Keeping our mouths shut and not talking about this stuff, really does nothing but support the general level of ignorance that is already around.

Better to deal in facts and correct the ignorant, than to let them continue along their merry way 'informing' even more folks with bad information.

Can't fix stupid, but we can try to head it off at the pass.

Cheers

The - not readily available ammunition - thing existed in a previous version of the law. It was undefined and utterly unworkable. Some folks still think it is a factor in antique status, apart from the current ammunition/caliber definitions.

I must admit with demncuik...I see no good coming of airing threads like this in a relatively public forum.

I think we should quit poking a sleeping bear.

here is a thought ..... is there a private forum somewhere this sort of thing can be talked about without the prying eyes of people who want to cause use as much grief as possible ....

lol no its all clear sailing im sure. Look even if they pull some crap like that guys with 45 acp webleys can pay the $150 to get there cylinders done back to 455
also any saas out there can be set back up in 44 russian or 41 lc or any of the antique calibers so easy.
Thats why i dont worry to much.

As far as gun shops not wanting to do the conversions i think thats just to cover there own arses. Cant say i blame them either.

+1!

You could always make one yourself, with free forum software, and moderate who is allowed to enter. Even then I could see certain people sneeking in. Maybe only invite certain members from here.

What I find funny is the number of people that are surprised that the firearms program has people monitoring CGN. I think that the only real thing to worry about is the promotion or actual doing illegal activities. I can't say I have ever seen anyone on CGN advocate any illegal activity. There is no harm in discussion, it is the foundation of our democracy, the belief in differing opinions. As for drawing attention to loopholes, the government spends a ton of cash getting people with an eye for detail to check, recheck, test, and check again firearms laws. Simple discussion of a perseved loophole is not going to do anything as the number of people that would actually do the conversion, are small I would guess. The price alone for antiques are high enough to prevent interest from most mere mortals. Never mind the cost of conversion on top of that, although the privledge of Antique Satus does make it attractive, i will admit. I highly doubt that any crime or stupidity on the part of an Antique Owner would just be brushed off because of Antique Status. There is however a lot of advise dispensed on CGN that is great and accurate, there is a ton that is BS, I heard from a friend of a Friend that dated a guy that works for the firearms program and so on, or just plain sounds good but who knows if it is accurate. Like others have mentioned the final source for what is legal and not is the firearms program Techs, if in doubt call and ask, then call again another day and ask someone else. If possible get paperwork, it is king. All the advise on CGN is great as a general guide however, when in doubt ask the people that are going to chuck you in jail. I know first hand there is a lot of people that talk out of their asses that work for the registry. I actually had one tell me that if a gun is not in their registry it does not exist in Canada, and a cop detain me for a while because I had a 30rnd "Over Capacity" Mag on my Ruger 10/22, that almost caused a riot at the range I was at. For the most part there are good people working for the RCMP so when you get "The Law" ask for the referance in the law or get a letter that way you are not getting some dumbass's opinion and actually got the real deal.
