I'm interested in a 300 mag (or 300 Ultra mag) and I'm interested in two rifle the Ruger M77 African in 300 win mag or the Remington 700 BDL in 300 win mag or 300 ultra mag, the Remington has a 26" barrel but the Ruger only 23", any advices?
No offence, but I think if you have to ask that question you'd be better off with the 300WinMag.
It will do anything you'll ever need it for. More factory ammo at a better price. Brass is a lot cheaper for loading and way less powder and recoil.
.
Both are very nice guns. My preference goes to the Ruger M77 though. I would stick with the .300 win mag. No need for anything bigger.
The 300 WinMag is a great choice. It's a manageable magnum. The 300 Ultra was designed for guys with an inferiority complex.
I love the older Remingtons but am disappointed with many of the newer Rem 700 line. That said, I am less disappointed with the 700 than I am with the Ruger 77.
Take a peek at the newest lineup from Winchester. The new Model 70s are much better rifles than either the Rugers or the Remingtons, but still in the same price range. Plenty of choices in 300 WinMag.
I dunno, with the older M77 models, I always said the only part of the rifle worth keeping was the action. The new Hawkeyes seem to be much better overall. Ruger QC seems to have gone up on the M77 in my experience, while Remington's has gone down. I'd hold a new M77 and a Model 70 in a direct comparison and whichever felt best would go home with me. If money allowed, I'd also suggest handling a CZ 550.
Regardless, .300 Winchester Magnum is a solid performer and would be my choice for .30-cal magnums.
Yeah the CZ 550 are really good guns but they are a little more expensive but I will take a serious look at them.
There is an old saying, "You get what you pay for."
If I were shopping for a new .300 mag, I'd look at the CZ-550 or the Winchester Model 70, and don't sweat an extra $100 or $200 bucks. Better quality; not just that, great value.
I think the CZ-550 and M-70 are the best bang-for-your-buck, on the market today.
