Its a tough one. The 1911s were not always built to the standards they are today, but based on modern improvements, I will say the 1911.

1911 only because Glocks don't feel comfortable in my hands.

they are both made for durability.. lots of glock guys compare their 9mm to a 1911 .45acp
a good 1911 is about $600+ there are a lot of crappy ones going for that this year because its the year to cash in on the centennial.
new glocks start at about that same price.
the real question is...
do you like heavy and pretty?

Yep. The Glock. It's like a ex-boxer, working as a bouncer. Not pretty to look at, doesn't write poetry, maybe has a little bit of a belly, but can deliver hurt on so many levels if you get out of line. Plus, if you like, never clean it. The gun, not the bouncer.

These are only a few questions to scratch the surface. I have been a fan of Glocks for years now and there great pistols. Very reliable, tough, and shoot great (once you figure out how you shoot them).
Both will last equally as long if serviced properly. Pick the one you shoot best!

That is very true...how many >100,000 round 1911s do you know of?
I have very rarely seen a 1911 go half that many...and those have had extensive rebuilding and maintenance which would in most cases exceed the cost of a new pistol (and these are $2500 guns) and in all cases would exceed the cost of a few new Glocks.
I have seen several >100,000 round Glocks with nothing but spring replacement.
The beauty of a 1911 is the trigger. Don't make it something it's not...it is not the world's ultimate hard-use pistol. It's a good gun with a great potential for accuracy.
But the overwhelming majority of shooters could not outshoot a factory Glock anyway.

The 1911 is an enthusiast's pistol and you have to commit to a few things like a regular/frequent maintenance schedule, spring/parts replacements, being your own armorer and "knowing stuff" that the average shooter doesn't (the secret 1911 handshake, etc).

So not worth it.
If that's the only advantage to the Glock you can think of, you probably won't fare well in any survival situation that might benefit from the use of a gun anyway.
For 100 years of "service" it has been eclipsed in popularity by SIGs, Berettas and Glocks. Not much of a reputation if you ask me. Outside the US, the 1911 is far from popular.

Actually it sets the trend. If no one outside the US is using it, and many/most agencies and units within the US aren't using it. Then its believed supremacy is nothing more than an illusion. Americans believe in the 1911 and .45ACP because they're too ignorant too know any better. Too much "all American" bravado and patriotism to see past the logic that precludes both the 1911 and .45ACP from being the "best" options.
