Moving to NB what Rifle to buy

How much heavier would it be? half a lb or so? :rolleyes:

+1 I hunt with a .30-06 T3 Tikka it has to be on par with the lightest hunting rigs out there, it is true though a lot of shots are under or around 100 yards, but there is a lot of open clear cuts and even some open areas where the power lines are, I don't want to handicap myself, you can go days without seeing a deer sometimes, would suck to see one a ways off and not be able to reach out and touch it.

I like short handy rifles for the woods in the maritimes. Any good lever action will serve you well or compact .308/7mm08. Long action rifles like the 30-06 are too heavy to lug around for the performance gained, imo. Most deer are shot well under 100 yards. The same for bears. Even most moose are taken at very close range.

On the other hand, if you get a kick out of hunting with a .458 or the latest magnum on the market but all means do it. It is all about having a good time in the end.

+1 on everything he said.

You can use a .22 Hornet to hunt deer in NB but you can't use anything bigger that a .22 centerfire to hunt coyotes after deer season.

:confused::confused::confused:

Because you might use a bigger rifle to poach a deer?

NB has some stupid laws!

Yes Tazz we waltz around with some silly laws for years in NS, about what you can and cannot hunt Deer or Coyote with.

We were worst of than NB on coyote back in the 80s when they first bcame a problem, because we were limited to Shotgun with No4 Buck(AAA). NB had the centerfire .22 law. Then we get the varmint caliber law, and I believe it was no heavier 55grs. Then it was any centerfire with no heavier than 100grs, hence my .270 load of 100gr Hornady Interlock @ 3360fps. That lasted a few years and then low and behold whatever rifle/load is okay for deer or moose you can use on coyotes all winter. Its been a long road but at least you can see the logical progression and not illogical BS, I will say that for our DNR. If someone is going to break a Game law they will use whatever and do it whenever they want. The law abiding hunter is finally getting the recognition he deserves here. Bravo to our DNR.:canadaFlag:

Depending on the rifle it could be as little as that but often more. Stick a scope on the gun that matches the preformance your looking for along with the longer barrel and it just becomes a cumbersome bother imo.

All boils down to your hunting style Imo(where/how)
Your not gonna stand hunt a hydroline or clearcut with a carbine, well ya might but it wouldnt be practical.

Absolutly, but I think a compact, short action .308/7mm-08 will give you all you need to 300 yards. That is about as far are most can make a reliable hit. Anyway, if somebody likes the 30-06 more power to them.

I'm with you on this one Wonksy....I'd love to use Dad's old 94/30-30 if I was still hunting the old hauling roads...but here in NS....everythings that's been growed here is flattened out!! :rolleyes: Ya should have the longer range capabilities IMHO. Big difference tween the two is that the long range guns will take game at both long AND short distances...the short range guns won't;)
Holy Frig...
It's so bad here now that they're replanting in the spring to harvest the toothpicks in the fall...the beavers are all getting false teeth..:rolleyes:..even the deer down this way have evolved to getting thicker, leather type bellies....that way they can scoot along behind the newly planted seedlings!:D
