How much heavier would it be? half a lb or so?Long action rifles like the 30-06 are too heavy to lug around for the performance gained

I like short handy rifles for the woods in the maritimes. Any good lever action will serve you well or compact .308/7mm08. Long action rifles like the 30-06 are too heavy to lug around for the performance gained, imo. Most deer are shot well under 100 yards. The same for bears. Even most moose are taken at very close range.
On the other hand, if you get a kick out of hunting with a .458 or the latest magnum on the market but all means do it. It is all about having a good time in the end.
You can use a .22 Hornet to hunt deer in NB but you can't use anything bigger that a .22 centerfire to hunt coyotes after deer season.
Because you might use a bigger rifle to poach a deer?
NB has some stupid laws!

. Stick a scope on the gun that matches the preformance your looking for along with the longer barrel and it just becomes a cumbersome bother imo.
All boils down to your hunting style Imo(where/how)
Your not gonna stand hunt a hydroline or clearcut with a carbine, well ya might but it wouldnt be practical.
