ATV use

Yes, let's tax, legislate, regulate and require insurance and license plates for everything. Let's start with bicycles then lawn tractors after that we go after the skate boards.

Some of these attitudes remind me of the common question I am asked as a gun owner..."what do you need a gun for?"

The reason for me to purchase an ATV was to increase my hunting opportunities.NOT to go tearing up the landscape like most here seem to think.Sometimes you have to go a very long ways over very difficult terrain to get to where you want to go and with gear AND if you leave with an animal it kinda helps too. I guess if I had the cardio of Lance Armstrong I could easily haul heavy gear and animals over my back over miles and miles of terrain, but looks like I am lazy.

It's a tool, just the same as we call rifles tools to do a job, very similar to how hunting on horseback was done,I however am not allowed to keep a pony in my back yard.

Some choose to hunt on foot, some use an ATV to get to areas, as long as you are out enjoying the sport what should it matter, respect the land and all is well.

Well it is law that ATV's need insurance in BC if you're going to ride it on the logging roads. But that would cost you around 800.00 for the year.

in what way are they insured ? ..........
this question isn't ment to sound assholish , but where does it state you need insurance to operate a atv on forest service roads ? ( i would really like to know ) .

when i was inquiring about getting some sort of liability insurance just so the police wouldn't fine me as i plowed snow in the winter , i was told it was going to be next to impossible , as it was not " road legal " ( this was finally from icbc ) .

finally i asked the person i was talking too , how does a bobcat or back hoe get insurance to operate on public roads ?

this was a possibility , with many hoops to jump through involving getting permision from the rcmp to operate within a set area specificly for snow removal .........

off topic .....

the straw that broke the camels back was , i bought the 4 wheeler from icbc .
when it was less that 3 months old , it was in the back of a truck that was written off and the plastic was scratched up enough that they bought the original owner a replacement .........

long story short they had no record of the 4 wheeler , no record of the sale to me and thus it didn't exist and i had no proof of ownership to get any sort of insurance ( the serial numbers off the machine came up zero hits ... ) .

Some folks have no idea... f:P:2: Give me your health and you can have my ATV plus my heart condition.

Yes. Some of these guys are obviously pretty young and just don't get it. I'm 68 years old, my knees are going and I don't have the stamina that I used to have when I was still packing moose and elk out on my back.

My wife said "Hey! You should get a quad and extend your hunting by a few years." One of the few times I listened to her!

Anyway, old hunters are not the ones tearing up the countryside.

Give some thought and consideration to the oldtimers sonny!

Well said Suka - I guess that's the secret. Find your own piece of paradise and tell no one and hope no one else finds out.
I wish you luck.
I hope I find mine soon;)

I agree.

we are building hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of km of new high grade road in wilderness B.C right now, add that to the thousands and thousands of kms of new siesmic cuts and pipeline corridors and you all are worried about a few goons on 300 kg machines tearing up old logging spurs???? Ever see a mulcher working the bush? There are hundreds of em out there turning the forest resources into 15 meter swathes of sawdust and chips at a rate you'd need to jog to keep up with.
There are lots of access and wilderness degradation issues in this province IMHO quads (tho I loathe them) are pretty low on the list.

Garbage and graffiti Ha! You can't carry enough twinkie wrappers on a quad to make a diffrence to anything but I can legally bury all the toxic waste I want.

Seems to me that the concern here is for individual personal hunting spots and the bother of having to share it, not for the integrity of the environment.

Don't forget to pet the white bear while your hugging that individual tree. (that you walked to from your SUV)

Agreed ! I am younger than you but have damaged discs and arthritis, so having a bike to haul my deer out is simply a wonderful thing.

Well, it makes for a pretty quick get away - hunting without permission. I did my scouting 3 yrs ago, for turkey, got permission, (only person), and absolutely NO HUNTING behind me location. opening day >> Bang, right behind me, (no hunting zone, but abandoned railroad track there)...scared the crap out of me!. Then ya hear a quad start and gone in 5 minutes, with my turkey!

ATV are used by the same people that go way back into the bush and use a rifle to shoot an animal! Are they too lazy or dumb to use a long bow? :p

FWIW, we have licensing for atv's in Ontario, but it doesn't license the moron riding it.

I've got an even better idea! How about everyone wears a yellow vest with a number like a license plate on it. And I'm not just talking about when driving an ATV I'm talking about whenever you're not at home.

That way whenever someone does anything that annoys you, like passing gas on a bus or giving you a funny look, you can easily read off their number and file a complaint.

Yes! Numbers for everybody!

The graffiti and garbage are a separate issue dealing with a general decay of morals in society.

I am saving up my pennies to by an ATV. Ive always wanted one. I cant afford to maintain a horse, I dont mind hiking with some gear but going really far distances its nice to be able to bring alot of stuff, the ATV is good for that.

I own an ATV and I use it quite frequently when I hunt. It allows me to get where I want to go without taking over eight hours to hike there. It is a great piece of kit. I will still hike for a ways after I get off the quad, but it is sometimes a necessary tool to get me where I want to go.

Oh, and I don't quite agree with the ones claiming that everyone who takes a quad into the bush is lazy; this statement is quite wrong. I cannot speak for everyone else who takes their ATV hunting, but I assure you that I enjoy hiking as well. I carry a rifle and a ruck at work and enjoy it, so when I am able to head into the woods on foot with my own rifle and gear, it is quite relaxing.

The graffiti and garbage are a separate issue dealing with a general decay of morals in society.

This statement is absolutely correct. The fault does not lie solely with the evil ATV hunters. People in general seem to have forgotten how to take their garbage with them when they leave the woods; but that's a whole other issue...

I have to say, I am quite surprised by those who are so quick to decide what others do and don't need in the woods for hunting these days. Kinda sounds like another group of folks often discussed here on CGN, doesn't it...

In Nova Scotia you have to have them registered and insure them or the police or natural resources will give you a hefty fine. Not sure if operating an atv without insurance will be the same as operating a car without insurance? Nothing but a tax grab.

Funny. Just bought insurance for that and it was $95 for the season

Quads save me time when I have very little. They get me deep enough into the woods where I can hike, and walk, and hunt. Not everyone on a quad is a dork, and not everyone with a gun is a lunatic.

Here is a little story about "damaging" the environment.

I use an old trail in the bush that is many years old and is just big enough for my quad that get's me to one of my spots.

Someone took offense to me hunting in this spot(crown land) and tried reporting me to the local CO.I do everything within the rules and laws and make every effort not to leave an impression on the environment.

The responding CO was given GPS coordinates to my location, he followed up, his method was to drive the tiny trail as far as his full size truck would let him, crash boom bang the whole way.

I wouldn't get too excited about fellows using ATV's, provided they respect the land.

I am n ATV owner and it is registered and insured, along with 2 registered and insured snowmobiles.

I have been checked for valid registration and insurance both quadding (in AB)and sledding (in BC). My opinion on it is that yes it may be inconvenient and have a price but if when some jack@sses want to be distructive or break the rules being able to grab a plate number to at least prove my innocence it is worth it. I am both a speed enthusiast and a nature/wildlife lover, which most ATV riders are. It is a small group that are the distructive and nuisance riders that cause the problems and to be lumped together with these people is unfair to the majority.

I do see the point here and both agree and disagree. This is just my 2 cents, take it or leave it.
