Your most successful deer hunting techniques?

Killed a lot of nices bucks walking the gullys the wind in my face 2 paces very slowly stop look all arounds turning my head VERY slowly wait a minute and redoing it 300 metres gully could take up to 3 hours to walk a dozen deers fells to this tactic, my rifle of choice for that hunt 44 mag, never took a shoot over a 100 feet... JP.

  • Scouting out movement patterns and natural bottlenecks
  • setting up before dawn, being careful to consider wind direction, etc.
  • establishing a "position" in tall grass on edge of a field near busy trail
  • sitting absolutely motionless for 3 hours until choice of deer presents (usually pass on a couple of small does before selecting mid-sized buck)
  • aim for kill shot, pull trigger
  • then the real work begins...

You are correct, only "natural" light is the law.

I will not confirm or deny my exact harvesting techniques.:p

I hope you can locate a big one on your game camera this year Kelly. You live in a great area to harvest great trophy's. Whitetail Junkie and I are thankful and grateful that we can still hunt in Saskatchewan. Next year may be a different story with the limited tags. However, we will enjoy doing the still hunting and hopefully put big boy down.

I prefer to sit on a watch. But when the venison doesn't seem to be moving, pushes/drives work well. That also depends how many hunters you have. If you have 7-8 guys, it's golden. Have 2-3 pushers, the rest sitting waiting. We have a great technique, but it does take work. It doesn't matter to me who gets the deer, I just love being part of it. The swamp we push the most is so thick, it's unlikely you would ever get a shot off being the pusher anyway. Most times, I don't even carry a gun when i'm pushing in there anyway. Ask Dumbdawg, he has seen how thick it is in there.

Your area, conditions, and manpower will dictate the best way for you to hunt, and if you pay attention to those (which will change constantly) your hunt(s) will benefit from it! Just my 2 cents.

Dave.

I'm only shooting for meat so I ge the regular tag + the 2 antlerless suplemental deer tags.

I then travel around the trails on my quad looking for moose if I'm luck enough to have a draw and shoot whatever deer I happen to see till I run out of tags :D If I dont have a moose tag I just travel around not looking for moose and shoot deer. Its simple really.

Seems to work out OK for me, sometimes I even get a big buck :D

Meat hunting before the frost: I hunt the feed in open areas with good clover and bluebell, a mid day hunt lots of driving around and some walking.

Buck hunting in november: Find the does, probably in older cut blcoks that have not been sprayed with round up, an all day hunt lots of waiting for somtning to walk out.

You have to narrow you tree stand location down to a single tree in the forest, that will produce deer day in and day out season after season. That is a magic tree and when you have one you will fill as many tags as you have!It may mean you will have to move a stand 3 feet to another tree but that is how you get a magic tree.

You are a good hunter.

Over the years I've shot/killed deer using almost every conceivable tactic known , but now that I'm older I much prefer to sit in a heated, elevated shooting shack watching as many as 40 deer at a time .
I have a choice of 7 shacks (heated) in different areas to choose from, plus about 4 semi-portables(unheated)when I feel more adventurous early in the season .
In most locations there is always something to watch . I've seen foxes, wolves, bears, coyotes, Lynx, martin, porcupines, weasles, beaver, mink ...besides the deer and moose that I'm hunting for....one day I even saw a cow elk and her calf.
I don't shoot does or fawns early in the season hoping that they will bring in Mr. Big .But don't hesitate during the last week of rifle season to shoot a couple .
Most deer are double-lunged between 100 and 250 yards, although I have shot them at 16 yds and twice as far as the above max.....I really like that 280 Remington....
I hope to build another heated, elevated shack this summer on my brothers place...some big bucks cruising through there .

I hope so as well and hope everybody else gets to see some monsters in the flesh.

Getting pictures of em is one thing, being there at the right time is another , this unfortunately is not the right time.Hopefully he has passed those genes along with great success the last few seasons.

This is at my sit and wait spot.

I've always done better still hunting. Tree stands preferably and when it comes to late season I prefer to use baited stands. I'm 28 with 27 deer to my credit after last seaon so somethings working.....

Bad news if your in ONT...The MNR has the baiting of deer under review my local warden tells me. He suspects that it won't be allowed as of next year.
