Over the years I've shot/killed deer using almost every conceivable tactic known , but now that I'm older I much prefer to sit in a heated, elevated shooting shack watching as many as 40 deer at a time .
I have a choice of 7 shacks (heated) in different areas to choose from, plus about 4 semi-portables(unheated)when I feel more adventurous early in the season .
In most locations there is always something to watch . I've seen foxes, wolves, bears, coyotes, Lynx, martin, porcupines, weasles, beaver, mink ...besides the deer and moose that I'm hunting for....one day I even saw a cow elk and her calf.
I don't shoot does or fawns early in the season hoping that they will bring in Mr. Big .But don't hesitate during the last week of rifle season to shoot a couple .
Most deer are double-lunged between 100 and 250 yards, although I have shot them at 16 yds and twice as far as the above max.....I really like that 280 Remington....
I hope to build another heated, elevated shack this summer on my brothers place...some big bucks cruising through there .
