Annual "Who's using irons" thread...

Will be taking the 95 Winchester with a buckhorn rear and silver post front.
Might also carry the 146 Husqvarna with its factory irons. Almost D&T'd it this spring but I could not bring myself to do it.

Nope, see the sights just fine, just trying to find out if there are any new bullseye shapes that folks like to use. The 95 was doing 1 1/2" at 95 yds with me at the helm, is that good enough? :)

I dunno...it's not MOA. Better sell it to me as it's obviously a dud.:D

Will use my BLR with open sights if need be.Want to fill tags with the arrow before going to the rifle.

Using scopes less and less for hunting.Been finding that a hunter doesn't need to rely on optics, kind of a more traditional feeling to it with open sights and a lever.

Nice shooting! Lotsa guys can't do that with their scoped, bolt actions...

I'd like to get something with my '95 someday. But...

No open sighted rifles for me, for the foreseeable future. Not when the hunting's serious anyways... Too little time in the field and, when I'm out, I'm usually accompanied by two noisy, little 'helpers'.:)

Hey Man!:)

Thanks. I much prefer shooting irons to scopes, the optics seem to blur as I like to focus too hard.
Seeings as your noisy little helpers like going along perhaps a small iron sighted carbine would be good for one of them to carry, they must be old enough now.:)

I don't mind shooting a nice set of irons. But, I'm much better, more confident, with a scope. A few years back a pair of wolves, a beautiful large black and a very pale grey, chased a cow moose and her calf out in front of me... me and the ol' 95 couldn't get it done.

The boys are a few years out yet. There is my old Marlin 3o-3o and a friend of our's old 35 Remington in the safe waiting for the day...:)

Perfect for pushing bush!
Hhmmm, may have to re-think my strategies...:)

Oooo, I know that feeling, last fall I was enjoying a Bull moose just standing in a meadow when he wheeled and took off. Not much later a pack of wolves came out from the other side. I had a scope but a old J4 weaver isn't going to get much done at 300yds when they are at a full run. I should have shot anyway just to change their direction. Boy they make the hair stand on your neck!

They seem to like the taste of them meeses.

Hhmm, there sure are a lot of them around these days. We had a small pack chase off a herd of elk we were stalking last year too.

They are definitely neat to see... every once in a while. Not too often.

I like having irons along with a scope. I try not to get an autofocus scope, so I can dial it in for 200 along with the focus. If my target is blurry with the scope, I know I can nail it with irons without adjusting anything. If the target is clear in the scope I can knock it off without using a range finder or calculating stuff. If the target is fuzzy and far away, well, then you adjust the focus until it's not fuzzy and read the marks on the dial to see how far away the animal is and hope you calculate the drop properly.

Posted this pic before - I'll probably be out some with this little Encore 45-70 thumper for deer bear or moose - not sure which - using 325gr FTXs chronographed at just over 2000MV from that 15" tube (testing Rem 300gr JHPs in pic). Had it out last year hunting a few times but nothing happened along. Be fun to connect with such a basic setup. This week I just bought a new 32" Allen case (hard to find) dedicated for its diminuative 29" OAL.
