Non-Restricted Semi-Automatic Designated Marksman rifle in current use?

Anyone know if/when the SCAR is likely to get its FRT? Any guesses on whether it will go non restricted? In the US, SOCOM has outfitted the 7.62 variant as a DMR. Apparently they needed the higher caliber in order to shoot at the guys on the next mountain over in Afghanistan.

The M14 variants have had a bit of a resurgence as well for that exact same purpose.

Any thoughts on whether a properly outfitted SCAR is an accurate rifle?

p.s. - Sorry for staying on topic in this thread, if you want to discuss troll topics I do have a thread going over in the "Discussion" forum.

1) Who knows. Probably. Maybe
2) Who knows. Probably. Maybe. ACR did, though that means little.
3) SOCOM did not 'outfit' the 7.62 as a DMR. They, as an entity, allowed units under its command to outfit themselves WITH the 7.62 as a DMR. Obviously only one of a multitude of sharpshooting weapons platforms in use.
4) The battle rifles, M14 included, are not so much an extreme long range platform as they are a squad support (for lack of a better term) weapon. The EBR is an example of this, and I would lump the M25 in there.
5) Yes. I'm sure it's very accurate. Define 'properly'. You could put iron sights on it and mount a live cat to the rail and it would still work just fine.

7.62X51 SCAR is a no-go. The US will NOT sell it to us.

Is this confirmed in general? I saw the thread about one specific importer whose permit was not renewed. What would happen if I tried to import one myself, would I be refused? Has anyone tried?

Not sure I would choose SCAR anyway but I'd like to understand that.

You need to confirm three things.

1) Wait for the FRT to be issued for the SCAR 16. This is what is holding up Questar's sales of the first (only) batch.
2) See if an FRT is issued for the SCAR 17. I do NOT think this was submitted because of #3.
3) Confirm with an American FFL dealer, that has and will export firearms to Canada, if the SCAR 17 has been approved for export by the United States regardless if the firearm is manufactured overseas. If it isn't, it doesn't matter what Canada approves. This is the headache our firearms dealers are finding when obtaining export permits for 5.56 marked lowers, firearms with folding stocks/flash hiders etc. etc. etc. etc. If you want to try and go through FN directly, independent of it's American operations, that is another avenue but I would anticipate it being extremely difficult unless you speak Belgium/Belgish/$.

Feel free to try. There is nothing that says you can't.

I do not recommend circumventing any legalities.

Troll or no Troll, I find something objectionable to this thread and the OPs questions. My decision to purchase a firearm would never be so tightly wrapped in political/ideological factors such as "nerfed", "used the way it was designed" etc. Function for the way I will use it always wins.

A few thoughts.

1. The firearm exists, therefore it was designed and built, that way.

2. If you are some kind of purest who wants an "as fielded" firearm, then why all the talk of modification. Why turn your nose up at the Timberwolf as suggested. You can get it out of the box as fielded with the exact same accessories even. Oh wait, no supressor, I guess its "nerfed".

3. And this one is my favourite. OP claims "I also am not interested in the hassle of a restricted weapon. I want something I can bring around with me and enjoy, not just show off in my basement, so I really want a non restricted rifle.. So you want to show off the firearm in...public? You want to spend thousands of dollars on a precision/tactical rifle that you will show off to people and then store in your car? Apparently you are from Toronto, so yeah, thats probably a good idea...

In a later post, you claim that you want non-restricted so that you can actually use it. Just what exactly is un-usable about a restricted firearm? Or more importantly, what is your intended use for this firearm, asides from carrying it around and showing it to people?

4. You have a hard time figuring out what is restricted/non-restricted. Don't worry, the guy selling you the firearm knows.

And I just noticed the OP has been banned...Not surprised. If you're out there trolling by a different name, I hope you take note:

By your own admission you took your RPAL, but have forgotten/ignored much of what was on the course. You have just dealt with garden variety hunting rifles and not really even paid that much attention to them...

I find your attitude careless and your intentions suspect. I believe in your right to own whatever firearms you wish, and for whatever lawful purpose. That said I find I think your desires to own the subject firearm are ill-conceived, and you should take as much as you can from the members of this community in regards to developing a sense of responsible firearms ownership before actually purchasing one.

If you think that was harsh, yeah, it was harsh.

Now, now Cam... talking sense doesn't always yeild the results we wish it did.

This young man obviously is interested in:

A) Showing his friends just how much he can look like his favorite video game character.

B) Testing the response time of TPS's ERT guys.

C) Asking noobacious internet questions without the means or intention of ever purchasing said rifle, should such a rifle be available for purchase.

D) All of the above.

E) I'm just an old, jaded Fudd who has no interest in these types of firearms, only in guns built before 1900.
