New Precision Rifle in the house!-New pics on post #52!

Beauty of a rifle! Any chance you can show us a pic of the recessed crown?? I'd like to see how Sean did on it.
Now you got me thinking about a Remington build.... Thanks a lot!

I am just on my way out the door, but I will try to do that for you tomorrow in the day light, I won't be home today until after dark!

Range Update

Well I made a few changes to my setup already, the Viper HS is a good scope, but it is not what I wanted long term so I went ahead and ordered the Vortex Razor HD 5-20X50 EBR 2B MRAD. For those not familiar with this scope, it is a monster! 35mm main tube, over 15 inches long, and 35 ounces, give or take. But, it has terrific glass, FFP reticle which at first I was a little afraid of, but the more I learn, the more I think it will work very good for my style of shooting, and it has the MRAD adjustment system. Some people will say negative things about the MRAD system, such as you can't adjust it fine enough, but you know what, I am not that great of a shooter yet so again it will fit my style very well. What I really like about this scope is it tracks consistently and repeatedly with very positive clicks on both the elevation and the windage knobs, and the zero stop on the elevation is awesome! Once I locked in my zero distance, I can click up and down all day long and I do not have to remember how many clicks I made because the zero stops does it for me. I will do up some pictures tomorrow in the day light outside for everyone to see.

I went to the range on Sunday with my 10 year old son, he has a keen interest in everything that has to do with shooting, so I took him with the idea he would be my spotter. Turns out he is a rather good spotter! I started out with the 260 and him on the spotting scope, It took all of three shots to have the rifle perfectly zeroed, but I would have had it in two shots but I dialed up rather than down! Anyways, after several "average" sized groups in the 0.4-0.6" range, I turned to a fresh target and fired three shots. I knew it was a good group by the look on my son's face, but from my perspective behind the rifle, I didn't know just how good. Turns out I shot a 3 shot group that goes 0.118" centre to centre, I have included a picture for you guys to see. This was done with a Caldwell bipod up front, and my arm/fist under the butt stock for elevation control. I still think I need to work on the load a bit, as I know this group was just a fluke, but it represents my personal best 3 shot group so I am still proud of it.

Anyways, enjoy the picture, I will post some of the rifle tomorrow with better light!

What's the ball park cost on a rig like that?

It all depends on your component costs. This rifle, with out optics was right around the $1500 mark, but you could pay more or you could pay less. In reality it comes down to what you want, I know I could have bought a factory rifle with similar specs, but I wanted the comfort of knowing I have a premium barrel, and that should there be any issues I could call and talk directly to the guy who did the work. Plus when you go custom, you can put your own mark on it, to reflect your personality.

2770 in the 260 is a pretty mundane load. I get approx 2950 with mine using 48-48.5 grains of H4831SC using 142 Sierra MK's.

Your Rem will crater primers even at lower loads thanks to their very generous firing pin hole. Don't use that as a pressure sign indicator.

This I did not know, I learn something every day! I didn't think 2770 was awesome for speed, but the cratered primers had me a thinking that was as hard as I was willing to step on the gas. I found though with the Lapua brass, 46 grains of H4831 SC and the 139 Scenars that I was compressing the load, with 2-2.5 grains more powder, would this not be "over" compressed?

Its a good idea for factory Remington actions to have the firing pin hole bushed. Its not an expensive job.

Again, I was not aware this could be done. Something I will certainly look into in the future.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate all the help as I am just learning all this stuff!

Pretty good shooting for someone who just learning. ;) Where's the 4th and 5th shot though? Got the wyatts metal in for you. Will get in the mail to you asap, no mags in the box but I had several shipments coming so likely in with some other stuff.

Thanks for the compliments Sean. I should have fired the fourth and fifth rounds in there but it looked so good I did not want to screw it up! Remember I am still an apprentice, Jedi Master!

Thats great the bottom metal is in but just wait for the mags to come in and ship them all at once, save some shipping $$.

Very nice rifle.

Thanks!

A gorgeous build. Thanks for sharing. I've got a build by Sean, too. I just upgraded my stock to the AICS platform. Now I have to shoot the unit and (re) tighten the bedding screws and then torque them down to 6Nm according to my instructions. :D I've had super success shooting the 108 gr Scenars from my 260 Rem Shilen Select Match barrel in 8" twist at the DCRA's NSCC matches.

I just purchased a few hundred 139 gr Scenars from Peter Dobson for the coming season. So it's time to work up a load this winter and do some early cold weather testing. Pics of my build to follow soon!

Nice shooting rig!

The power ring lever is a Vortex product, works really well too.

The weight all dressed is 13.6 lbs, which I find to be a nice weight for both range work and not too bad for hunting. But I will be investing in a good sling...any suggestions?

I cheaped out and needed a sling quickly. Went to CT and grabbed a black nylon web with come kind of rubber/gelatin pad on it. Figured it would do for now. Was I ever surprised. Turned out to be one of my favorite slings.
Rubber doesn't slip off shoulder, makes heavy rifle (M305 with scope) actually comfortable to carry. Was only like $20. I can get you the name if you like.
Not sure if the Accurracy Gods will strike you down for trying a cheap sling on that bad boy though. :D

Hey Barney, yes Sean told me a little bit about your rifle and I was watching your thread about your rifle and the NSCC matches. It looks like you have a winner there too, and the AICS stock must be sweet!

I am currently using the 139 Scenars and I also have the 123s to try out as well. The rifle really likes the 139s, I just need to get the right loadtweeked out for it.

As for a sling, I bought a new muzzle loader this year that came with a sling that is actually pretty nice! It had plastic swivels on it so I quickly swapped them out, but I really like the stays up on my shoulder, and it adjusts quick too.

Hi Crashman,

Very nice rifle!

I also have a Shilen Match barrel in 260Rem from Sean and I would like to know what is your OAL with those Scenar 139gr ?

In mine, I easily get a compressed load with H4831sc... 43gr is getting crushy when seating the bullet.
Thanks again!

I am loading 46 grains of H4831SC with the 139 Scenars in Lapua brass to an OAL of 2.820". I can really feel the powder compressing when I seat the bullet. I am going to do some research and see if there is another powder that will give me good load density and velocity and need to be so compressed.

I could be wrong but I believe rl17 might fit the bill

You`ll run into the same problem with rl 17. 17, 4350 and 4831sc are all at mid 90% cartridge capacity, perhaps higher with thick Lapua brass. Why go through the trouble of building a custom to have it throated where you can only load the 140 range bullets to a coal of 2.82"?
