Hi all,

I'm in the market for my first pistol. I was wondering if some experienced shooters could provide feedback.

I know I am comparing apples to oranges but would I enjoy shooting something more like a 1911 or a glock/m&p? I want them all but I only have enough money saved up for one. Looking forward to your posts.

I still prefer the 1911 platform just because I am an old fart of the old obsolete school: steel, hammer fired, single action.

However the Glock is fun to shoot, if you like the trigger of your barbecue lighter:D Seriously, I do like my 17RTF but do not shoot it much because I am cheap so reload mostly homecast lead, which the Glock's barrel can handle in limited quantities only.

Well since you are comparing apples and oranges rather than blondes and brunettes I can only assume that you are a ### vegetarian, and therefore it will be glock/m&p for you! :p:p:p

Test a couple you like and decide which you like the best. 9 mm is cheaper and less kick so good for practicing. I went with the Glock 17 Gen 4. Love it so far. Happy shooting.

glocks and m&p's are nice, plentiful and always around with tonnes of knowledgable people willing to help out if you have issues... (which u wont, technical anyways) go for the glock great starter pistol.. and a good pistol to keep around... it will outlast you.. just dont sell it, you will regret it...you will find that the m&p is very similar...different grip...thats pretty much it...the 1911 is much different tho, belongs in any collection...you should have both a glock and a 1911

Glock then 1911 for me.

NAA.

I've owned all three, and have shot all three quite a bit (more than 10,000 rounds through each) the Glock/M&P choice is very much an individual thing, whichever one feels the best to you will do just fine (especially in 9mm - there's no real point to a 40S&W for a sport shooter). Currently Glock is having issues with the Gen 4 models, so that may be an issue for you. The choice of a Gen 3 (or 3.5) or an M&P comes down to trigger reach and hand size, both are stupid reliable. The 1911 is an amazing tool, the gun and cartridge were designed for each other and work very well indeed, the principal issue here is ammunition cost. The 45 is a fantastic cartridge, but it's not a cheap one unless you intend to reload (which you really should anyway). You will spend more on ammo for a 1911 than you spend on the gun in a very short time. If I was in your position, I'd get either an M&P or a Glock, and work on the basics for a year or so.

Some IPSC Standard Division competitors might take issue with that statement.

and I would refer to those folks as "competitive shooters" as opposed to sport shooters who are buying their first handgun. I'm generally of the opinion that someone buying their first handgun is going to want to develope some familiarity with the tools prior to jumping into the dark arts of IPSC. Also the increased recoil and cost are probably going to be counter productive in a new shooter, the 9 is a great starter cartridge due to it's mild firing characteristics and the fact it's cheap to buy and cheap to reload.
