I can recall seeing a clip of a guy taking just the wad from a 12ga at close range. They were making a budget film and tried to make their own blanks by removing the shot from the shell.
I saw it on one of those "caught on film" shows that are on TV. And the recipient of the wad went down handily. I have no doubt a load of 7.5 or 8 shot would have ruined his day.
Just to add I am not advocating the use of birdshot for defense but a load to the chest at home defence range is not something to take lightly.
Remember self defense right in Canada says that you can use equal force to retaliate.

12 guage birdshot is at best a questionable home defense round.
.410 birdshot is nothing short of a joke!
If your chosen ammo can't penetrate drywall, how do you expect it to stop a badguy hell bent on attacking you or your wife?
Not going to weigh in on the legal aspect of defense but.......
As a professional Paramedic I have seen several close range 12g birdshot human wounds. I can asssure you they are devastating.
At room distance they haven,t opened much if at all and deliver all the energy including wad which is usually found in the wound channel.
I would have every confidence in birdshot at room distance and it is the least likely to over penetrate either the target or other medium.

Truly. While 00 might leave 30 big holes, 400 #7 pellets will make mush out a 5" diameter circle on a person.
Far easier to find 30 pellets and fix that, than trying to fix the other one. You can't suture jell-o
