Whats the hardest kicking gun you ever fired?

This older gentleman in Kelowna has a European double rifle in .577 Nitro Express, and he offered to let me try it. I'm not very recoil sensitive, but the only way I'd fire that thing again is if an elephant was charging towards me! My shoulder ached for days!

55 caliber Boys anti tank rifle fired from a bench rest. When it went off I thought my shoulder was broken. Mind you I only weighed about 130 lbs. at the time.

I've given this a lot of thought and although not painful, the hardest recoil was a TC contender pistol(12") with a 500 gr lead bullet at 1600 ft on the chrono. The load was scary accurate, but standing holding the pistol in isosciles hold, your elbow lock released, your shoulder lock released and your hands hit your chest. the pistol torqued in your hands turning them about 45 degrees. The fact the recoil energy was absorbed over these separate events took any bite out of the recoil. After 20 rounds you were tired and the next day triceps were stiff a bit.

I only let a few people shoot that load. If they were experienced shooters and had witnessed me shooting it to see its power. There were always a surprised look followed by a huge smile.

My brother reminded me of the load the other day, which spurred this post.

The worst rifle I remember firing was my dad's Weatherby mark V in 300 Weatherby. It kicked like a mule! Mind you, I was only 14 or so at the time, and weighed about 120 lbs. soaking wet. At that time, though, I routinely shot a Ruger #1 in 375 H&H and another #1 in 300 Win. with no problems. Another one that could be nasty on the shoulder was an HK G3, when fired on rapid fire. I was never able to fire more than 4 or 5 mags (20 rounds per, back in the good old days) without getting a nice dark bruise.

My benelli nova with kent 3-1/2" turkey loads would have to mine but il'll tell ya my father has an old single shot cooey with a solid butt and that thing I'm sure kills just as easily on that end as it would on the other. ouchh. I fire 5 or 6 2-3/4" number fours through that and I develope a flinch every time although I have tried a few times to fix it.

A Remington 700 BDL in .338 Win Mag. I don't know why, but that rifle was a beast. Extremely unpleasant to shoot. It belonged to my friend, and at the time I had a Sako FinnFiber in .338 Win Mag, which was a pussycat. Next in line is a Mauser 96 (straight-pull) in .300 Win Mag. It had no recoil pad and weighed 6.25lbs + rings and scope. The stock was very slim profile and it just dug in, especially with hot 220gr loads! My Remington Safari Custom in .416 RM was much nicer than either of these!

1899 seems to me the BDL you mentioned was a bastard to shoot even in 7RemMag compared to the Model 70. Is it the stock lines of those classic BDL's?

OWCHHHH how long did it take for you to wake up?

I was out for a second. I came to with my head on the bench and I could see lots of blood. My head hurt. Of course, I am thinking "How bad is it?" And "What happened?"

One look at the rifle told me that it had not burst. I took that to mean that my injury could not be too bad. I broke the action open and two shells popped out. It only ejects empties. That told me it had doubled.

I had never been kissed by a scope before. The scope had punched a dent in my skull.

The next day I looked pretty bad, but is was just a cut and a bruise.

Weatherby Vanguard in .340 Weatherby. Beautiful, expensive rifle, but damn that thing punished you when it unleashed. 100 grains of powder in each shell. Having said that, it was very accurate! Glad it wasn't mine and I was just trying it out!

Since a couple of weeks, i have to say that the 416 Rigby CZ 550 got my attention pretty good... VERY powerfull rifle... Cheers. JP.

I've had a few old 12 ga single shot shot guns that kicked like a mule, very unpleasant to shoot! I think they were even worse to shoot than my oldest son's Ruger No.1H in 458 Lott!

So you bought one then? Factory Federal loads are a walk in the park,(a walk that will blow a hole in your bank account) but stiff handloads straying up into .416 Weatherby country are a whole 'nuther matter.

On mine its the difference between "what's the big deal?" and "what hit me?"

Did order some A-frame 400 gr bullets, got my 40 cases ready for real action... Cheers. JP.

There is some slight consolation in knowing that whatever you shoot will get hit harder than you will. :D

I shot about 1000 rounds out of my .416 in the 4 months before my first buffalo hunt, with 30 per day being my sensible maximum. Looking back, I can safely say that I'm never going to do that again. Something inside my left ear clicked when I walked for the next two years.
