308 vs 30-06

Bad weed?

The 30-06's 12mm case length advantage over the .308 makes it slightly less over-rated than the .308 since the extra length means better heavier loads with the .35Whelen being a great example of that. The .308 and 30-06 are the two popular rounds for people that don't know much about hunting and are just getting into hunting or firearms. Not that this is a bad thing since I’d rather see a newbie hunter shoot a deer with a 30-06 or .308 than use a .243 and have to track it or, like I’ve seen one idiot do, use a .22hornet. Both of the rounds capabilities of taking big game like moose and bison is also highly over-rated since most experienced hunters I know will not shoot at a moose or bison with anything less than a .338Laupa. Not saying they can't do it, but how dead do you want that moose? Then again, the 7x57 has taken down over 1000 elephants but then again, a lot of people who hunted an elephant with the 7x57 got killed because they pissed off the elephant when the bullet would bounce right off its head.
You must have found the wrong bag.

Mistake the bong water for juice???

I love .308 Win, I have 5 or 6 of them but if you're hunting on Vancouver Island .243, 6.5, 270, .308 or 30-06 just won't make much difference, they'll all work fine. The only one I'd think twice about would be bear with a .243, other than that, shoot whatever you want.

What I like about .308 is that it is easy to load accurate ammunition for. Don't ask me to explain it, I just find it very forgiving. A good bullet on top of an a typical load of a typical powder just seems to shoot well, whereas I find some calibres difficult to work up a good load for. Also, lots of good .308 bullets to choose from. It is also an efficient and inherently accurate cartridge.

Last year, while we were grinding up a couple of deer for sausage shot with both the .308 and .30-06, I could tell that the .30-06 was in fact deader than the other one.

Now, I'm not really a fan of the taste of deader meat, so I'd much rather go with the .308

A fellow shooter once told me that the 308 is a good silhouette cartridge but anybody that would use one for hunting would likely fornicate with sheep. Needless to say i have a 30-06.:D:nest:

Interesting! I've been in this game for better than 4 decades, yet those are the two .30 caliber rifles I prefer, and have no problem packing a .30/06 for bear work . . . that would be polar bear. With respect to the men who participated in the ivory trade, I'll bet there were as many who used big bores that were killed as were killed using small bores. Elephant hunting was dangerous, and done properly it still is. A heavy 7X57 solid will not bounce off the elephant's head, but penetration and placement is critical. As for your hunting acquaintances who choose the .338 Lapua for big game, loaded with a decent bullet, its a good cartridge for the man who can shoot it, and a disaster for the man who can't.

You see, I never said the 30-06 can't kill a moose. I'm just implying that most experienced hunters like to use a .338Laupa. It all draws down to, how dead do you want that moose or bison? The .338 is a lot more likely to make a clean kill. Actually, since they made the .375H&H the minimum to hunt elephant with, A lot less people are getting killed well safari hunting yet they still insist you should use something a lot bigger like the .600overkill. Surprisingly, a lot of people were killed well hunting elephant because the shot didn't penetrate or, the person didn't know that you’re actually supposed to aim from behind the ear at the weakest point of the skull to actually penetrate. My grandpa has told me horror stories of his .303 bouncing right off the shoulder of a moose and during my hunting course, both of the instructors also told me some stories around the same line. Although, these could just be stories.

You know what..........................pass that s**t over here!!!!;)

Ummmmmmmmmm, So what exactly are you trying to do here?

I don't usually say anything about a person's opinion but I think you are either trying to get folks wound up or the 70's got the better of you.;)

Once again, if you hit your target in the vitals, either one will do just fine.

What I'm trying to figure out is why on one else has figured it out except for you. When I saw 30-06 vs .308, two of North Americas most popular rounds I couldn't help it. Well at least you saw though what I was doing. Its fun picking on diehard caliber or gun fans because they take everything so seriously. If you see a Glock vs 1911 form you can bet your ass I’ll be there.

most experienced hunters like to use a .338Laupa.

Yet it rarely seems to get suggested around here.....hmmmm.... Looks like our "experienced hunters" around here are trying to keep a secret!!

Oh wait a minute....most experienced hunters have probably have no clue what a 338 lapua even is!!! They've all been using their 30-06, or 303, or even *gasp* 30-30 to kill their moose since before 338 lapua was ever designed!

I don't take hunting information from the internet seriously. Most really good hunters don't even know how to use the internet or just don't care about the internet. They tend to have better skills that keep them entertained like mechanic or house projects or they drink beer with their friends. I know everyone around this area has a .338 for moose or bison hunting because I asked that same stupid question at my first appearance at my local Fish & Game meeting and they all told me to use minimum a .300win mag for moose and that they all use a .338Lapua because it’s good for moose and for the thick hide and strong bones of a Bison. There is a big difference between calibers that can kill a moose and those that can be relied upon to stop one. I'm not a skilled hunter, not even close. But I’m good enough not to use a 30-06 on a moose and good enough to never make head shots.

Most experianced hunters I know have a .308, a 30-06 or a .270 and get a 300 win mag if they want to "waste" a moose. Gun nutz are the ones with a bunch of rifles and caliburs. (In my experiance)

.308 Winchester vs. .30-06 Springfield

Personally, I like 'em both but the .30-06 is a classic, so it gets my favour....

Wow, just wow. Head to newfoundland and ask if a 30-06 or 308 can or can not kill a moose. Or even better if the feebel 303 will just bounce right of a huge moose. If you say they won't take moose you will be laughed in to next year. Your shooting animals, not robocop. Guys who need big guns are like guys who need big trucks, just trying to over compensate for something LOL

You're intelligence level is incredible. I'm pretty sure I never said they can't. I'm going off of what my grandpa has told me and I believe him because of this YouTube video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzT33sEhQ20

.308 bounces off the head of a Hog! The hog is in the lower left of the video. If a .308 can bounce off the head of a hog, then a .303 can bounce off a moose.

That should pretty well end this stupid debate with all these so called hunters that don't know what they’re talking about on this form. I never said the 30-06 or .308 can’t, but the .338Laupa can sure as hell do it a lot better.

My preference is the 308 Winchester. If your hunting or shooting in areas 100-200 meters go with the 308. If you intend to shoot longer ranges over 300 yards go with the 30-06.

If your a starter the 30-06 will be a better choice, you can find ammo for it.

Both are good, so try them both.

I have a friend who shot a Bull moose with a 243 winchester. I've shot one with a 270 and it dropped. Shot placement is more important than how large a cartridge is. Your fish and game club must have had too many drinks.

303 British has been a classic for the the natives and Inuits for Moose, Caribou, Bison, and Polar Bear.

Any caliber is good. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT!! PERIOD

Minimum for moose is 243 win and bigger.
