YOU'VE GOT TO SEE THIS!! (largest coyote ever shot in Newfoundland)

It's a Wolf/Coyote hybrid, more commonly recognized as a "Coywolf". They have made their way to the Eastern most provinces and it's not as uncommon as you might think. From what I know of this,is that the interbreeding began to take place somewhere in Northern Ontario/Northern Quebec.Being that Quebec has the closest proximity to Labrador it shouldn't be too hard to understand the logic behind it. Here in N.S. I have seen Coyotes as big as 50-60lbs, which is about average.

All of the eastern coyotes in this part of the continent have wolf DNA in their lineage. That's pretty common knowledge among the biologists now. Our average coyote in NL is 38 lbs, not 50-60 lbs, though there are certainly more than a few of those. They've collared a few in the mid 50's range. And the biggest one I have seen taken prior to this was a bit over 60 lbs, iirc. I have a pic of that one somewhere if I can locate it. But this thing is something else entirely. I have trouble believing its not a wolf. Certainly more wolf than coyote.

CV32,you are right,I guess my saying that 50-60lbs is average,is a bit of a stretch. But without actually killing one and having it weighed I could only pose an estimate. At 50 yards it was looking quite large though for a Coyote.

Yeah, no worries, most folks tend to overestimate their weight on sight. Especially in winter with all that fur. Skin em out and most look like a starved cat. :D

"The first wolves to inhabit the Island of Newfoundland MAY have arrived over the sea-ice from Labrador, as the last Ice Age drew to a close, about 10,000 years ago. But, recent evidence seems to suggest that they arrived much earlier, and survived the Ice Age, along with the Newfoundland Caribou and a variety of other species, in ice-free "refugia" to the south of the glacial ice-sheet. "

"The eastern coyote is found throughout eastern North America. It is not native to the island of Newfoundland. It was first sighted in 1985 off the Port au Port Peninsula, and the first specimen (road killed) was confirmed in 1986 in the Hughes Brook area."

Personally, I see no reason why a wolf or wolves couldn't have walked across in recent years. They probably did before, and we know for a fact the coyotes did.

Looks pretty wolfish to me.

I hope it is a wolf, and this signals their return to take their rightful place and cast down the usurping coyotes.... o.0

Sooo.. why'd he have to go and kill it? Just because it was big?

Having seen my share of both, I find it hard to believe a Wolf wouldn't kill a Coyote on site, and that is if the coyote ever got up the balls to get close enough for any of this to even be an issue.

I know it has been proven, and that such an inbreed does exist, but I just find it hard to believe.

Honestly Mr. Game Warden, it s coyote....dont take my guns and my truck!?!?!?

totally a wolf

I thought this myself.

What are the hunting regs concerning Wolves in these parts? Did he have the appropriate license/tags if it turned out to be a wolf?

Then again if you did shoot something you weren't supposed to why would you be calling the game warden or media out to take blood and tissue samples, etc?

I wasn't going to stick my neck out on this but others have done so aplenty so I will too. I have seen untold numbers of coyotes and a number of wolves. To me that looks like a timber wolf or MAYBE a cross.
The DNA results will be interesting and I hope they will be posted here?

I have to admit that I would also like to see wolves return to the island, after all they are a native species unlike the coyote (even if the original Newfoundland wolf was a white wolf and I believe slightly smaller then other wolf species), another thing they didn't just go extinct they were wiped out, so yes I'd love to see them return.

I kind of figured it wouldn't be long before the A-holes with nothing to say would come out of their holes with they're dumb Newfie crap.... And We're the Dumb ones !!!!! way to go guys you just made the I'm an ass list.

That's wolf or mostly wolf, said having handled more wolves than most. It's not especially heavily built, as far as wolves go, and I mean facial structure not weight, so I can see coyote being involved. That said, that's a cover my arse statement if the DNA test comes back to refute what I've said, to me that looks a lot like what an "adolescent" female looks like up here. Colour, weight, and structure all look like wolf. Hopefully they do the smart thing and let them come back, neat news.

Shoot Savage no ill intent was meant with my Newfie wolf joke. I have all the respect in the world for Newfoundlanders and I intend to vacation at Twillingate this fall. My post with joke removed.
