Interested in buying a SCAR17 rifle with a couple of extra magazines and need to know a little more about it.... Pros Cons and where and how to buy one.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

First problem is getting one out of the states,

Second problem is getting a FRT

If the Scar16 finally gets its FRT it should include the 17.

Getting one out of the states is another matter.

Long story short, you probably wont be able to get your hands on one of these for the next year at best.

my suggestion would be buy an RFB or a XCR-M if your looking for a non restricted in .308. Or you can look at a whole bunch of different AR's or variants in .308.... you will not be seeing the Scar17 anytime soon in Canada.

use the search function and look for XCR-M
they are new on the Canadian market and only a few are kicking around at the moment, but there are a few sponsors on here that can put you on the wait list.
they are non-restricted, semi-auto, and .308

and the Scar17s for comparison

If the track record of the Scar16s is any indication, you're probably looking at a couple of years before we see one, and when and if it shows, you're probably looking at about $4000 for one. Xcr-m seems the way to go, with the FAST stock they look pretty similar.

So now that with the LGR gone, do we even need to register these Scar? As long as the barrel is longer than 18.5???

Firearms Reference Table, the list of firearms that the CFC maintains that is the official record of their classification as non-restricted, restricted or prohibited.

An FRT number doesn't make a firearm legal in Canada. It is a number for the purposes of registration. I am curious to see now that the LGR is gone about that. No need to register it if it is non-restricted. then theoretically - If no need to register it then there is no need to have an FRT. Interesting.

FRT's are required for determining the legal status of a firearm. It's not directly linked to registration and still fully applies to non-restricted firearms.

I may be wrong then, can you show me in legislation where FRT defines status? Not being snarky here, I am seriously curious. As far as I know - and I have been wrong many times and always stand to be corrected - the criminal code decides what is restricted, prohibited and non-restricted. What am I missing here?

FRT is necessary to register a firearm. If there is no FRt then the firearm cannot be registered. Hence the whole delay with these. RCMP refuse to issue the FRT # and there the firearms cannot be registered. According to the criminal code, the FN SCAR in semi auto is either restricted or non-restricted depending on the barrel length. No where has it been confirmed that this is a variant so that has no bearing (yet - you never know what they will do next)
