Hi Darce,Hoppes solvent seems to work but I was told by a gunsmith that it won't remove the salts, so I wind up using a ton of it. With CLP do you just have to spray and wipe everything down and that's it? I'd rather not use water at all.
As bad as that sks looks, It would clean up and shoot, They are a well designed firearm. Hi cal if you want to send that to me I will take it.
WD-40 is a very underrated economical cleaner for corrosive ammo .. ive used it for years with no frosting or pitting in sight on any rifles ... sometimes im too lazy to clean my gun when i get home from the bush so i just spray a good 3 second shot down the barrel ,piston, gas block and bolt face and leave it till i get around to cleaning it , sometimes a few weeks lol never any rust grows .. I use it too when im camping for a few days or more and shooting corrosive ammo everyday. i spray a shot down the barrel and fouled parts and run a old bore snake through it once before i go to bed .. does the trick
WD40 is great too for corrosive ammo
I just used a regular powder solvent (hoppes #9 etc) and scrubbed all the parts the gas touches (the rusted ones above) followed with a nice coat of oil to keep the moisture off and mine stayed rust free for the couple of years I had it no problem.
Adding water doesn't seem like the best way to combat the problem to me... Water + Corrosive Salts + Steel = Garanteed Rust.
If you insist on using water to dissolve the salts... make sure its boiling so it will at least evaporate and dry quickly. Though as I said... I had mine for a couple years (fired almost a full crate through it) and didn't use water once. No rust for me.
Some cleaning solvent and steel wool will do the job.
