Do you need to clean an SKS? YES, pics.

As bad as that sks looks, It would clean up and shoot, They are a well designed firearm. Hi cal if you want to send that to me I will take it.

its unreal how fast your SKS will rust after shooting corrosive primed ammo. I let my SKS sit for a bit over a day after firing 500 rounds through it and the main piston was almost pitted.

Hoppes solvent seems to work but I was told by a gunsmith that it won't remove the salts, so I wind up using a ton of it. With CLP do you just have to spray and wipe everything down and that's it? I'd rather not use water at all.
Hi Darce,
Hoppes works fine. Been using it in my SKS I bought back in the early 90's. No rust yet and I don't soak the rifle in water ever. All moving parts get wiped down and gas ports/bore cleaned with patches of Hoppes#9 and coated with synthetic 10/30 motor oil after. No need to pour Hoppes everywhere. CLP also works, but Hoppes and synthetic oil are cheaper.

Zep concentrated orange cleaner. 1 gallon will last a long time. The residue is almost greasy. This works better than Hoppes. Rinse with hot water. No real need to lube an sks. Perhaps a bit to help the bolt slide. Dissemble bolt block and clean too. Lube will make more residue stick to everything.

We will use that one for a disabled trainer in the PAL class, it probably would shoot with some elbow grease, however, i prefer to use it as an example, to cut down on SKS abuse! Thanks for the offer anyways....

WD-40 is a very underrated economical cleaner for corrosive ammo .. ive used it for years with no frosting or pitting in sight on any rifles ... sometimes im too lazy to clean my gun when i get home from the bush so i just spray a good 3 second shot down the barrel ,piston, gas block and bolt face and leave it till i get around to cleaning it , sometimes a few weeks lol never any rust grows .. I use it too when im camping for a few days or more and shooting corrosive ammo everyday. i spray a shot down the barrel and fouled parts and run a old bore snake through it once before i go to bed .. does the trick

I've been using this method without problems. It's even easier to clean with the WD-40 applied, carbon residue just wipes off. Great if you can't properly clean a gun right away after shooting.

Whoever failed to clean that rifle needs to be beaten to death with same - THAT is a case of cruelty beyond all measure! I cannot comprehend how someone could not clean a firearm, and then trust that it might not blow up and kill them.

Criminal negligence!

I overkill it to be sure. Run boiling water down the barrel, piston barrel, and everything else in a sifter. Then I use Hoppes on everything. Wipe down and Remoil everything. Shot my SKS twice with 100 rounds each time and the gun looks new.

I just used a regular powder solvent (hoppes #9 etc) and scrubbed all the parts the gas touches (the rusted ones above ;)) followed with a nice coat of oil to keep the moisture off and mine stayed rust free for the couple of years I had it no problem.

Adding water doesn't seem like the best way to combat the problem to me... Water + Corrosive Salts + Steel = Garanteed Rust.

If you insist on using water to dissolve the salts... make sure its boiling so it will at least evaporate and dry quickly. Though as I said... I had mine for a couple years (fired almost a full crate through it) and didn't use water once. No rust for me.

And thanks for that by the way!! It still works (and looks) great! :D

All I've ever used is Hoppes too, no water for me! :)

I just don't run corrosive ammo anymore. I'm willing to pay slightly more.

I'v been able to find MFS non corrosive FMJ steel cased around here lately for decent prices so that thats what I shoot.
