A question (only) for those of us that like these two lever action guns....... Which would you prefer? A Savage 99 in a clip fed, tang safety .308 or, a Winchester Mod 88....... why?

Thanks - Nick

I prefer the 99. A couple of reasons but primarily I find a better triger on the 99 and the tang safety is much easier for a lefty. I have owned an 88, but my preference is the 99. Of all the models I prefer the 99F lighter and usually good shooters. (at least the 2 I've had in 300 sav were)

I prefer the 99, mostly because of the trigger. I have seen some great triggers on 99's, but never on the 88. And I do like the tang safety, and the Savage mag release.

I would have to choose the 88. I've had, over the years plenty of both. I can no long cycle the action on the 99's due to Aurthor Ritus in my hands. It's just to painfull. There is that "tight spot" in the 99's when cocking. That's where it bites me! I would choose the 88 over the 99 even if I didn't have to. Why, just personal preferance, I suppose. Oh yeah, and I do wear a Winchester hat on certain days! :p

The 88 of course! Love the action, smooth like silk, fast cycling, the travelling trigger and trigger guard are great. I find it has a nice balance too. Trigger isn't very pretty, but it works.

Really not a fan of the 99. I hate my .250 sav, never leaves my safe.

I have both. And I like both.
For reasons I don't understand the savage is the one that gets to go hunting and gets carried the most.

Never owned either, have handled both.

I think the 88 is one of the nicest looking rifles ever built. The 99 on the other hand is quite hideous, IMO.

Opinions are quite subjective, I like the model 99 and it is often called one of the best, pertiest lever actions out there. The m88 doesn't even look like a lever action except for the lever. It has a crappy trigger and a bad stock design for handling recoil! But I do admit beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Try them both and see which one you prefer.

I've had a pre 64 Model 88 and currently own a pre-mil serial number Savage 99F, both in .308 Win.

I prefer the Savage 99.

Bah. I dont know how anyone can describe the 99 as "perty". Theirs just something about it for me that makes it ugly.

Now, can we agree that the BLR is the ugliest lever action?

I had a 99, and I have an 88. The 99 wasn't up to the accuracy hype I'd been hearing, but maybe it was just that one.
The 99 is easier to strip, except for the mag, and even that can be done once you get used to it.
The 88 is I think lighter, and stronger, although both will handle the 308 nicely. I found my 99 shot better with lower power loads.
The trigger sucks on both, but the 99's trigger is a bit better, and easier to work with.
I used open sights, peeps, and scopes on both rifles, but ended up scoping both.
Not a lot wrong with either rifle, but my personal preference is the 88. For the moment at least. :)
