The few AR-10Ts that the CF bought for Afghanistan that I managed to put my hands on weren't that great...
I have one of the test rifles. So it didn't get abused. Shoots like a laser. quality is very good. Heavy but very accurate and looks like it could take a lot of abuse. I'm not sure what you thought wasn't so great about them. A semi auto capable of sub .5 moa is pretty good in my opinion. Triggers could be better but that's just a replacement away. The upper and lower are just heavier versions of the AR15 nothing fancy but the the fit/finish is excellent.
Here's my DND AR10 beside my DPMS LR-308. Also have a LMT MWS with 20" SS 1:11.25 barrel. The LMT is a very nicely made rifle. But the bottom line is I doubt it's going to be any more accurate or work much better than the AR10. I just happen to like the features so I bought one. But a comparable AR10 will shoot with it no problem.
The magazine debate:
A lot of the "mag" issue isn't really a concern today. When they first used the Generation 1 mags which were just converted M14 mags people didn't like them. The generation from the last 3 years is good and frankly appears to be a match for the DPMS/SR25 type mags. Very similar. The only thing is you can't get Pmags for them but that's only been a recent thing for the DPMS/SR25 rifles. Also it's possible to make AR10 mags from existing M14 mags. So should there be another ban in the US or mags aren't available there is still a supply. In the next year Armalite will have a lower that uses the DPMS/SR25 mags as well. It should also be noted that DPMS originally shipped their LR-308 with polymer mags that were crap. Years after they had shipped steel mags that fixed the issues you could still read on the internet how the mags weren't reliable.
