The few AR-10Ts that the CF bought for Afghanistan that I managed to put my hands on weren't that great...

I have one of the test rifles. So it didn't get abused. Shoots like a laser. quality is very good. Heavy but very accurate and looks like it could take a lot of abuse. I'm not sure what you thought wasn't so great about them. A semi auto capable of sub .5 moa is pretty good in my opinion. Triggers could be better but that's just a replacement away. The upper and lower are just heavier versions of the AR15 nothing fancy but the the fit/finish is excellent.

Here's my DND AR10 beside my DPMS LR-308. Also have a LMT MWS with 20" SS 1:11.25 barrel. The LMT is a very nicely made rifle. But the bottom line is I doubt it's going to be any more accurate or work much better than the AR10. I just happen to like the features so I bought one. But a comparable AR10 will shoot with it no problem.

The magazine debate:

A lot of the "mag" issue isn't really a concern today. When they first used the Generation 1 mags which were just converted M14 mags people didn't like them. The generation from the last 3 years is good and frankly appears to be a match for the DPMS/SR25 type mags. Very similar. The only thing is you can't get Pmags for them but that's only been a recent thing for the DPMS/SR25 rifles. Also it's possible to make AR10 mags from existing M14 mags. So should there be another ban in the US or mags aren't available there is still a supply. In the next year Armalite will have a lower that uses the DPMS/SR25 mags as well. It should also be noted that DPMS originally shipped their LR-308 with polymer mags that were crap. Years after they had shipped steel mags that fixed the issues you could still read on the internet how the mags weren't reliable.

The only thing I don't like about the SR25 is the price. Otherwise I'd own all three of the AR308 used in Afghanistan rifles. The AR10, SR25 and LMT. One of these days it might happen. The prices have come down from a few years ago. But right now the price point is still a bit too high for me and I don't want to sell any of the rifles I already have.

The fal was/is the greatest battle river ever produced, had the hk g series been made in greater numbers it likely would take the honors. I believe the new Swiss arms sapr will soon take top honors once it sees wider circulation. From the list the hk mr308 is a might fine choice, although heavy.

I do believe larue makes the most accurate in 308, using lothar walther barrels.

Oh so many great choices and none of them are bad.

I'd also vote for Armalite SASS cause I have all the parts to build one, except for a barrel. think I'll use Lothar Walther like my other one.

The Canadian DND AR10 I believe also uses lothar Walther barrels. Like Fireball I'm also putting together a SASS Armalite. It will also get a lothar walther barrel.

So is that an LMT-produced lower on the SR-25?[/QU

yup.

If you look around, I'm pretty sure that you'll find a thread where KevinB admits it.

Also I voted for the LMT since I have one. Also I think it's the best bang for the buck. Significantly better rifle then an DPMS or Armalite, and a lot better value then the Knights, which may be a better rifle, but not 4k better.

IMHO

With this reasoning in mind i think the HKMR308 takes the cake overall. SR25 is just to hefty on the wallet for the most part. The HK is comparable to the KAC in quality and less in price.

The LMT, at least the chrome lined version, is still significantly less, then the HK but its development and testing backround, shows it to be the equal of the HK.

No actually it doesn't, the amount of rumors that come out of trials like the one that won the contract in the UK for example does not prove they are equal. At least that is what i think you are referring too. If I recieved money for how many times I hear false or exaggerated stories of HK myths being pumped out and rehashed I could afford another black rifle 308 from KAC.

There are a lot of different models and guns built to meet specific requirements and better more expensive materials used to sometimes win contracts.

The HK417 used in that trial were of older stock and last minute entries...
