Wow, there's a lot of hate on here for IPSC and the people therein. The experiences outlined in some of the posts above certainly do not mirror mine though, and I have been playing since 1985. I can say without hesitation that most of the people I've met in this sport have been some of the best people I've ever known. Of course any large buffet will have a couple of flies buzzing around but for the most part we ignore them and go about our business. And to be fair, if you just happen to catch a generally decent guy on his worst day and base your entire view of the sport on that one experience, I would say that IPSC isn't for you. I would in fact say that any sport that involves interacting with other people isn't for you. I find it hard to believe that IDPA people and IPSC people are fundamentally any different. They're people who like to shoot. Nothing more.
In my view, both sports have their pluses and minuses when it comes to rules. Doesn't matter which flavor you pick so long as you have fun. Try `em both; maybe you will end up participating in both.
Good luck and enjoy!
