IPDA vs IPSC

Wow, there's a lot of hate on here for IPSC and the people therein. The experiences outlined in some of the posts above certainly do not mirror mine though, and I have been playing since 1985. I can say without hesitation that most of the people I've met in this sport have been some of the best people I've ever known. Of course any large buffet will have a couple of flies buzzing around but for the most part we ignore them and go about our business. And to be fair, if you just happen to catch a generally decent guy on his worst day and base your entire view of the sport on that one experience, I would say that IPSC isn't for you. I would in fact say that any sport that involves interacting with other people isn't for you. I find it hard to believe that IDPA people and IPSC people are fundamentally any different. They're people who like to shoot. Nothing more.

In my view, both sports have their pluses and minuses when it comes to rules. Doesn't matter which flavor you pick so long as you have fun. Try `em both; maybe you will end up participating in both.

Good luck and enjoy!

Yep

I prefer IPSC due to the fact that in most courses of fire you are going freestyle.
There is no one best way to go at it.
Really lets you be creative and push your limits.

I don't like rules or mandated order of engagement. Totally ruins it for me.
I shoot for the sport of it.

And I suppose one thing that really ruins IDPA for me is that I get no pleasure imagining I am engaging "threats". Like I said, I shoot for sport and to test the progression of my shooting ability.
Although I really dig the fishing vests.

Attitudes differ depending on where you shoot. IDPA in the US can make me feel a little queasy when you are taking "head shots" and the discussion at the reload table gets around to "wound channels" and such.

What do you see as the big difference between IPSC and USPSA ? I know there are a few differences in the equipment rules and divisions but what else?

well I like the rule differences for all the divisions, especially the new rules for standard in 2013 (which is essentially, no comp no red dot, everything else you can think of is fair game)

i like that they use the original targets, i like the lack of mandatory safety course, no min bullet weight for open, major pf is the same across the board...

ill try and think up more

Well said Rob, I cannot agree with you more.

I'm new to the competitive shooting, but I tried IDPA and it was a blast. Great time and met some very cool people. I will be doing a lot more of it too. Never tried IPSC, but would love to give it a try it's just not as popular in my area.

IPSC...mostly fat, middle age or older men and its ALL about how much money you dump into your gun. Tried it once... I couldn't stand all the BS I was hearing about all these guys amazing feats, how many flies they kill at 100yards with their STI .45s, ect. Very VERY elitist. My favorite part of the day is when my brass was jacked 20secs after I finished my run because apparently "I didn't look like I wanted it". Tell me again how rich you are when your panicking looking for that ONE missing 9mm brass casing that is not even yours.

My day was slightly turned around when watching these guys try to run, climb/get on the ground tho. :)

What a total bunch of :bsFlag:

Why not? I ask purely out of ignorance and don't mean anything by the question. I don't shoot IPSC (yet)

no reason to shoot bigger than .40 and .40 is cheaper so anyone who is going to go on and on about how great their gear is would have something in .40

altho with the new classic div, if i was shooting major id shoot .45 cause ive seen way to many finicky .40 1911s

That's good cause I bought a .40 :D

My only real gripe with IPSC is that the Glock 34 isn't in Production Division, though it is in USPSA. I like the idea of shooting both disciplines with the same gun, guess I'll have to settle for the 17. Otherwise, each offers something different, not nessarily better or worse than the other.

...I think you will not find any local (to Edmonton) IDPA matches. Ponoka is the closest range to you that holds the occasional match. Most of the IDPA activity is around Calgary. And those matches are 1-day affairs.

For that reason alone, I suggest you check out IPSC at Spruce Grove: local matches, lots of active shooters, advice and support, etc. Get your Black Badge - it is a good intro to action shooting, regardless of the flavor.

+2
the Black badge course is money well spent and all of the instructors in Alberta are top notch guys. The Spruce Grove guys are a great bunch (almost makes one want to live in the 'Chuck - yeah right!:nest:)
You can play both games once you have it and if you have the time and energy, you are well poised to travel all over the province for both!!
