Just like the title says, anyone hunt with a new reproduction or antique 10 gauge?
I ask this because when I look at a fired off 3 1/2 10 bore shell, there's really not much visual difference in the payload versus a 2 7/8s in the all brass shotgun hull.
I also hear rumours that 10 bore modern muzzleloaders can be fired with some pretty stiff BP loads also.
For those with a choke, do you find any difference in range & power than Magnum 12 gauge modern loads?

I wish to hear about anything BP ten gauge.......

Tell us some hunting stories please?

i wish a old 10ga double brass shells and bismuth shot other then the bismuth shot everything is a waterfowling classic of yesteryear
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. If one reads any old waterfowling stories from the pages of something like Gun Digest, we modern shooters have missed out on the "Short 10s" and thier incredible leadshot range and dense patterns.
Elmer Kieth even abscounded himself onto one of the very first Ithaca NID Magnum 10s circa 1932ish. It is said he reported not much difference between the 3.5 and the 2 7/8s for pattern effectiveness.

yes but gone are the day of lead shot for stupid reasons

a 8ga double would do even better but the guns cost a arm and a lag and the shells have to be made or brought from rocky mountain cartridge and sent to a friend in the US then sent here (with paper work saying the reg's about shotshell hulls)

Yes, well all is not lost. Think of the possiblities friend: turkey, pheasant, close range deer, close range black bear, varmint hunting & wild boar in some places.

its funny you can hunt all of them with leadshot but they dont see that when them farmers fields get flooded and we hunt waterfowl where is that lead shot :p

I agree the whole leadshot thing is just gigantic scam IMO.
All those years of duck/geese hunting in South Saskatchewan, and all those fowl that died in the warmer fall months from communicable diseases then, when leadshot was legitimate. It has to be worse now.
Now there's probably at least a 90% drop in duck/goose hunters and in the last few years geese have been decimating the tundra up north where they nest.
Coincidence?? IMO conservation groups such as DU are complicit in this high level of utter stupidity.

I agree with the above. However I have played with black powder loads in my 10ga double. Its heavy enough at 11 lbs 6oz. Don't think to many could shoulder and shoot a 8ga double lol. I didn't have brass hulls just reloaded federal plastic hulls. Fun big bang big smoke clouds. Killed crows ok never took those shells to field. I'd like to load some brass hulled slugs for bear hunting over bait. My 10ga is to big to carry all day. 32" barrels she's a bit long in thick bush but would be a blast from a stand. I'm looking for a smoothbore 10ga sxs muzzleloader as of now for whitetail

I have a muzzleloading 8ga double. It is a big gun, not something you would want to carry for a day afield. Probably was a waterfowling gun in its day; can't be used for that now.

slugs in a double is not the best id use buckshot (000 or even 0000 can be used well enough in a 10ga i load both in 12ga shells)

You know that's a crying shame tiriaq. The Migratory Bird Act was a piece of legislation enacted when everyone and his dog was a waterfowler. Times have changed considerably IMO.
It's rather ironic that the UK is the only English speaking country that allows the big ones up to and including punt guns for bird hunting isn't it?

Very cool! Thank you for contributing sir.

My 10-bore double is a shorty: mere 28-inch barrels, made back in the 1880s.

I do not hunt although I have nothing against it. Personal mobility problems really contribute.

I am loading for my old gun with cut-down Federal 3-1/2-inch casings, 90 grains of powder and a 480-grain .690" hard-cast ball saboted with a single turn of .006" card stock inside the shot-cup.

It will blow a ball right through a railroad tie.

I'm not terribly worried about Zombies or medium-size Velociraptors.

The plastic hulls I used burned badly but not thru. I however didn't do it the logical way. Can't remember for sure but I think it was 40-50 grains of bp a shot card then a reused 10ga shotcup filled with #8 shot and then a glued on shot card tightly holding the package together. I never patterned it but blasted a few crows outta the trees with em. I don't recommend this load in case its not safe. It worked well in my gun. Just cleaned it up with boiling water after. I'd love to get an actual muzzleloader 10ga and 12ga sxs.

Here is the Belgian 8ga along with an English 14 bore. Gives an idea of the relative size.

Haven't considered selling it. Been working on a little collection of 19th century doubles, most muzzleloading. In their day, these were about the most common working guns around. The 14 bore is a very nice gun; have had it about 40 years. Shoots as well now as the day it was made. Have used it to hunt geese, snowshoe and arctic hares, ptarmigans and grouse.
