I am thinking about buying a Remington 700 and was just wondering about their quality... I know the 870 shotgun quality has gone down the tubes so did their rifle quality get poor also?

I'm usually not one to suggest the search function, but at risk of sounding like a douche In this case I'll make an exception.
Just type Remington and quality and you will get all you can handle.
I'll even give you a preview...new Remington's are inaccurate steaming piles of poo that may discharge without warning:rolleyes:, Cerberus is a soulless corporate juggernaut buying up respected gun companies with the intent to drive their name into the ground.
Suddenly the EE is awash with "pre-Remington" Marlingtons that are worth 300$ more than new rifles! All hail the almighty intranets!

Yes, the finish on the Express version of the venerable 870 shotgun seems to be not as durable as the more expensive Wingmaster, and anecdotal evidence suggests there are more defects in 700 models than there should be from a manufacturer of Remington's standing, and the 710 model was so bad they had to rename it 770 (and still you hear more bad than good.)

Personally, I don't like the company much and while I acknowledge that long running success of classics like the 870 and 700 are deserved, most of their guns will work just as they should. If you really want a new Remington, go ahead. The odds are that you'll get a good one.

I bought a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308 last year. I have only put 100 rounds through it so far, but I haven't had any problem and I am very happy with the accuracy. Several of my friends told me Remington horror stories before I purchased it, yet they don't actually own any.

The fact is, your chances of getting a good one far outweigh any chance of picking up a bummer.
A lot of Tikka owners jump on the bandwagon to slag the Remington 700.
However, I have owned a T3 that was a horrible shooter with anything you tried in it.
You can guess how long I kept that turkey.
I'm not slagging Tikka T3s, most of them are very accurate.
Just using it to illustrate that they all have duds in their stables from time to time.
Buy that 700, you will love it!!

I love Remington and have for many years. Still have quite a few of their rifles and shotguns however really think it is hit and miss now when buying a new 870 or 700.
Have also bought three tikka t3 in the past few years and man they are sweet accurate guns. I have another 223 to buy this year and I am going tikka again. Just one man's opinion

Cerebus had a chunk of Remington for a while? No wonder the horror stories. Look what they did to Chrysler; after DB raped them senseless.

Anyway. I haven't owned any rems yet, though I likely will in the future. I try not to be near as bias about guns as I am about cars. I will say though lately I've had nothing but grief with their .22 ammo; and I aint the only one.

Thanks for the info fella's. To reiterate I am specifically interested in Remington 700 rifle quality ... not 870 or other shotgun quality issues.

Cheers.

I've bought the 870 super mag and a 700 sps tac in 308 in the last year and both have functioned flawlessly. The sps finish leave something to be desired.

Rounds fired
700- 120rnds
870- roughly 3000 give or take

why?

there are dozens of other brand names, why anyone still want to buy a Remington with death trigger?

if you genuinely care about your kids, your friends, don't touch Remington. Remington killed many kids by design(death trigger design).

i love rems but prefer older ones. won't own another blued sps crap finish but a cheep rifle. ss sps arn't so bad. have some customs on 700 recievers but the rest is not rem. other than a trigger adjustment needed and maybe bedding there not bad rifles out of the box. you can get a poor one from any company. i have had poor shooters from rem, tikka and ruger that have needed work. best to buy a cooper if you want a good shooting trouble free rifle from the box. at two to three times the price.

The only Remington I've ever owned was a 597. That piece of #### gun coupled with all the horror stories I have read and heard first hand from Remington owners is enough to prevent me from ever buying another one of their products, unless it is at least 20 years old.
