I just got a new Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm last week and finally got a chance to get out to the range this morning to put my first rounds through it.

I set up my target at 7 metres and fired a group of 5 rounds off using the Weaver stance. All rounds were slightly left (I have a tendency to pull left) and almost 20 cm low. I tried again, bracing and using sandbags but the thing just constantly fired low. I asked the RO to try a few founds to see what he thought and he found the same thing. There doesn't appear to be any way to adjust the elevation on this pistol, only windage.

Anyone have any tips? I generally use the middle image as my sight picture. Does the M&P use the rightmost one for its zero?

Honnestly I only fired 150 rounds through mine so far and I use #3 and it seems to work, although I would prefer #2 as it's more natural for me. On a side note, anyone know the size of allen key for the rear sight set screw?

think its an m&p thing. my M&P.40 was shooting low and left for the first box or so. dont know if its just me getting used to the gun or not. it seems to have gotten better after ive shot it more. still not getting results i think i should though. i have an m&p9 vtac waiting to be transferred so i will see i if its me or the gun.

Try using image #3, initially I had the same problem but low to the right (I'm left handed). And I switched up to the 3rd one and it was slightly more accurate. Don't take my word though because I was using the range's M&P; I'm still waiting for mine to be transferred.

I would run more ammunition through it before making any sight adjustments.... it might be you or as stated above, the ammunition...

I have fired this gun once and no.2 perfect for me, initially I used no.1 and it was too low.

I went out again this morning and put another 50 rounds of 115 gr through this pistol. I tried the new sight picture from both the Weaver stance and with a bench rest. It's not as bad as it was before, but I'm still getting consistently low hits. (~10 cm low at a 7m target). There's no way the rounds should be hitting that low at such a short range. If anything, they should be hitting slightly high if this thing was zeroed for 25m. I pulled it apart and reseated the barrel and spring, but there was no real change. Still consistently low.

I'm going to see if I can borrow a laser bore sight and also try some higher grain ammo but I am really starting to dislike this pistol.

On a brighter note, I just got my goofy looking Beretta Neos. It may look ridiculous, but it shoots like a dream.

I would recommend reading some of the threads about the M&P on this forum, many of which have shooters that are new to the M&P (or handguns in general) mentioning their impact being low. A common consensus seems to be that more often than not it is caused by shooter error (not saying this is the case here, but it's good to have all your bases covered).

There is a great reference picture a few posts down in this thread that might be able to help diagnose any points you might want to look at with your form: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?837308-New-M-amp-P-9mm-What-do-I-need-to-know

You can have some success with raising POI by using heavier bullets....try some 147gr and see where they plant.

Hitzy probaly has hit the nail on the head. I fired my son's new M&P 9 with whitebox Winchetester 124FMJ and it was point of aim back to around 15 meters. Went prone at 30 meters, and even relaxing my grip for a little elevation flip, they struck low about 4"s. So i'm guessing those 115s would be down 6-8" or more at 30yards.

I remember shooting my 4"bbl S&W 459 with 9mmNATO(124grFMJ)alot at 50yards prone, and just squeezing 'em off slow with a prone weaver supported, they'd only strike 4" low at 50yards on a Fig11/59!!!! Guess the old 9mm when fired this way, crossed up at 20yds to POA, and fell back at 40yds or so to POA, hence the -4"@50yds..

Good luck with your new 9mm. They appear to be fine pistols. Just shoot a little high till you chew up the 115's if score counts, or shoot center of mass and accept the lower groups, but ever tightening in size in the mean time.

The lefty thing is just grip. It will improve. Look at the pistol shooters grip error chart to see why.

.....p.s., that 30 meter group measured 2.1" with a vernier,..so that pistol sure can shoot!!! Enjoy
