I heard that the new line of leupold VX-3 are comparable in opticaly than the Zeiss conquest line ?
I also have a Zeiss conquest 6.5-20X50mm on my REM 700 (.308W) and the optic is very good, clear and precise for the price, under 1K$ and 1"tube.
I had in the past a leupold vari-X-III and the optic was not comparable to the zeiss, the optic was more yellowish.
At the stand, i had the chance to see thru a leupold VX-III and it was yellowish to !
There's a difference between vari-X-III, VX-III and VX-3.
So maybe i will go to swarsorki z5 in the futur, but the price is 2/3 time the price of my conquest, so does the optic quality is 2/3 time better than a Zeiss ?
THX everyones, sorry for my english skills...

You're paying for a 5x zoom range on the Swarovski Z5 and a better image quality. Is it that much clearer than the VX3 or Conquest to warrant the extra cost? Only you can decide.
I have a Z5 5-25 and to my eyes, there is a big difference in image quality, especially at higher power settings, compared to a Leupold or Conquest with similar power.
Of the three scopes you mention, I would place the Z5 first, Zeiss second and Leupold last.

If you can swing the cost of the Swarovski, absolutely it is the best of the three. Is it 2/3 better than the Zeiss? No, but it is better, and as per the law of diminishing returns, the further you get up the scale, the less improvement you see per dollar cost.

x2 well said

The Zeiss Duralyte line is definitely worth checking out....a bit more expensive than the Conquest line but much cheaper than the Victory line. Zeiss is bringing out a few new goodies in the Conquest line in a few weeks as well.

The Swarovski scopes are nice, but be aware that some of them have very thin plex. Take a look at the VX-6, it is far superior to the VX-3. If you are looking at high magnification, the new 3-18x44 and 3-18x50 VX-6s are out now, and should be a couple of hundred less than the Z5. Also, in the Z5 price range, I'd look at the S&B offerings from Wolverine.

If you guys are comparing, factor in Leica. They are priced well below others for the quality you get.

I think they are trying to break into the NA market.

Zeiss is coming out with the Conquest HD5, 5 times power zoom, 2-10, 3-15, 5-25, glass suppose to be better too.

Ya i seen the price was up on the HD5, unless the glass is better I think I would stick with the old Conquest, the 5 times zoom isn't a big deal to me.

If it is retailing for that much then it is unfortunately out of my price range and I will be picking up a 3-9x40. Some googling showed me that they are releasing them officially on Jan 2nd. Will be interesting to see what it is priced at Camera Land NY at then. As it turns out, I will be in Florida on the 3rd.

Wonder if it is worth the bother to pick up a scope while I am down there.

Don't try to bring it back without an export permit. US export laws trump Canada Customs.

There is a reason Cameraland doesn't ship rifle scopes.

Not worth the hassle for about $60 it seems. Hope Lebaron has it in stock. Last time I was there, Bass Pro did - at the same price. I'll try to pick it up on the 2nd before I leave so that I have everything to put my rig together when I'm back.

It's not so much about the hassle (expensive to get the export permit, must go through a US registered exporter), but on the off chance you are caught exporting a scope, it will be confiscated, and be banned entry to the US for a minimum of 5 years. That includes being on the no-fly list, so a person can't even overfly US territory.

Just a note, all reloading components, empty brass, projectiles, etc, as well as any parts to a firearm, require an export permit. Don't want anyone to get in trouble.

Wow! I'm on Nexus so I'd never want to jeapordize that. It is SO useful for business travel. Often makes a difference whether I can get home in time to read to the kids or not.

Was talking with a buddy of mine and most of the general public including him would be totally unaware of this and might have just picked one up while there and not thought about it.

By the tone of the previous posts, I thought a little comment might be useful.

In the US Export Regulations, there is no difference between a piece of used brass, a screw or spring specifically made as a firearm part, or a complete firearm.

Note that reloading equipment, such as presses, dies, and other mechanical equipment do not require an export permit.

A couple years ago, a person posted that they were coming back from a gun show in the US. He had purchased a holster or something similar, that is clearly gun related, but shouldn't require an export permit. There was an exit check, and the US Border Patrol confiscated it anyway, and sent them on their way.

A few weeks later he was going on a business trip to the US, and only then did he find out he was banned. I don't know what happened after that, but he was fighting it through his lawyer. Apparently a very difficult process to overturn.

The US hands out bans like Halloween treats. Years ago, I knew 2 people who were banned for either 1 or 2 years because the customs officer thought that they might be working in the US.

So if I went to the States and bought a Forster Co-Ax Press and some dies I am 100% Ok? SandRod menitoned components and I am reading that to be bullets, brass, primers, powder not acutal equipment.

Makes you wonder why they retail for some much more up here...the press I mean.

When you guys mention getting caught exporting a scope...do mean by US border officials or Canadian? Or both?
