Hey guys, as it says above im new to the AR game and am looking to get my hands on something in the near future. Iv been mostly into Milsurp and hunting gun the last couple of years but looking to branch into something that will likely start off life as a plinker and range toy and if i get into some sport shooting, ie 3 gun, in the future i can adapt it to work for that.
That being said i kinda have a thing for the older style M16 looking setup, something that looks like it came outta the jungles of Vietnam, or a movie of that sort, haha.
Iv been looking around on the site sponsors here and havent been able to have any luck finding something like this, most i find are expensive modern tricked out versions or short barrel carbines, which i might grab up one of later on if i find i like the platform. Where would be a good sport to look for something like this?? say for around $1500 or thereabouts??
If i cant get the AR i want right off i might just grab up a Norc and try it out to see if i like it, my M305 has been a blast, and maybe build later on. Either way, thanks for any direction in this.

the norc CQ 311 is a copy of the old M16A1. if you can find one there you go. it just needs new paint and you can change the front handguard cap to the triangle one that is .625? diameter and get the old handguards and you pretty much have your m16a1. or you will have to find an old colt all the new guns have the left hand shell deflector on them.. check the EE there was a norc on there not to long ago for $700?

Get Colt 6920 model if you can...

What? The 6920 is an M4 carbine variant. It is about as far as you can get from what he wants.:onCrack:

By far the easiest approach would be to check the EE and online dealers regularly looking for a Colt SP1. It is the closest thing to an 1964-era M16 that Colt ever built for the commercial market. The price up to a couple of weeks ago was usually about $1200. Over 100,000 SP1s were made from 1964-1982 and since they were non-restricted here at the time quite a few made their way into Canada. How many actually ended up registered is a different matter, but still they are commonly encountered.

Thanks for the info guys, im not quite ready to buy just yet, im still saving up some cash, but ill keep my eyes out on the EE for the Colt, and or anything else that interests me, im not in an big rush. Ya see my biggest problems is i have yet to meet a gun i didnt like, just some i like better then others and the best part of the AR platform is, once your familiar with it, its like Lego, you can swap and change as you like.

ps, and Battlerifle, that pic is exactly what im looking to get... for now

Yes but he changed the grip and handguard.... that alone makes it worth more than double the price....

ahh ok... that makes sense....f:P:

i was going to order 1 when they went up for sale but i was at work and couldnt figure out how to place the order on my blackberry....i refuse to buy a apple

Traditional? ;)

These kinds of handguards, grips and stocks should tickle your fancy.

Uuuuummmmm, pretty sure those weren't in any Vietnam movie I ever saw, still kinda cool, though, think we could sneak that around the restricted registration, should be non scary enough for most regular folks. I'd buys set if it will make the rig NR.

May I suggest getting a flat top upper and adding the carry handle/irons. At least then you can keep the traditional look but have the option of putting some good optics on when the irons get boring.

If you are really determined, any full size AR with fixed A1 style sights can be modded. My rifle is a Colt transitional A2, and thus still retains the A1 style upper/sights. I put on a vintage A1 pistol grip, tear drop forward assist and triangle hand guards for my "M16A1" look. Small differences include the barrel and lack of mag fencing, but for the cash ($1100 all in) and being a Colt it's hard to beat. The 1/7 barrel really shoots well to boot!
